I am an enthusiastic, positive, and patient graduate of Skidmore College (BA, music; minor, international affairs). My teaching experience includes directing several collegiate choirs and orchestral ensembles, singlehandedly coordinating the music program at Camp Onaway (as well as teaching in a variety of other areas, including but not limited to the knitting program and counselor-in-training program), teaching ESL courses and conversation clubs in Amman, Jordan, and teaching one-on-one lessons in piano and voice.

I believe in a mix of hands-on, practice-based learning, as well as a solid understanding of theory. There are many ways to learn, and I constantly adapt my methods to suit the learning style of each individual. I love to teach, I love to help, and I love witnessing the "aha" moment when, suddenly, everything clicks! I look forward to assisting in as many subjects as you need.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Arabic

I took 2 years of college-level Modern Standard Arabic and studied abroad in Amman, Jordan with CIEE. I received high marks in Modern Standard Arabic level 5 out of 6 while in Jordan, in addition to a semester-long class in the Jordanian dialect (which added up to at least 12 hours of specific Arabic instruction per week). I lived with a host family and was immersed in Arabic. I have taken several courses in Middle Eastern culture with CIEE and at Skidmore College, where I minored in international affairs. I also completed an internship teaching ESL in Amman, during which I became very familiar with some of the differences between English and Arabic. While I am not 100% fluent in Arabic, I am certainly qualified to teach basic skills.

Composition (Music)

I graduated from Skidmore College summa cum laude with honors in music (my major), and received the highly regarded Periclean award for my senior project in music composition. My compositions included choral works, a string quartet, a string sextet, and a song cycle for voice and piano. I am experienced in composing for many instruments, and I am familiar with many of the challenges. I am also highly familiar with music arranging, having made arrangements for vocal and instrumental groups.

Ear Training

I have a strong background in music theory, having graduated from Skidmore College with honors in music. I took 3 collegiate levels of theory, as well as several courses in composition. I am familiar with the difficulties of ear training and the many tricks to make it easier. I have been singing in a cappella groups since high school, for which ear training abilities are necessary. I was also the musical director of an a cappella group for 3 years, during which time I personally taught ear training skills to many students.

Elementary (K-6th)

I feel very comfortable with the concepts of K-6th grade, and I love working with that age group. I have worked with elementary aged children for several years at Camp Onaway, as both the natural science program director for ages 9-11 and the music program director. I have taught piano lessons to this age group for many years, but I am also familiar and comfortable with almost any subject in elementary education. At camp, I was also the cabin director for 10-year-olds, which familiarized me with the common needs and concerns of the age group. Thus, I am easily able to adapt my teaching methods to suit young learners.

ESL/ESOL

I taught 6 days a week of ESL in Amman, Jordan. I taught an 8-week English intensive course of 2 hours a day, 3 days a week. I also led the conversation club, a casual but instruction-based group lesson, 2 hours a day, 3 days a week. I am a seasoned English instructor, and I understand the challenges of learning English. I know a lot of the tricks to make it easier, and I love to help people improve!

French

I took 10 years of high-level French, from middle school through college. I spent some time in France with a host family, and I am familiar with a lot of the challenges of French vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. I love French language and culture, and I am excited to pass the knowledge to others!

General Music

I graduated from Skidmore College in 2012 with honors in music. For my music major, I studied a wide range of musical topics, including music theory, vocal performance, music technology, and conducting, and I won Skidmore's Periclean Award for work in music composition. I have directed several different choral and instrumental ensembles at a collegiate and professional level, and I have taught music to 9-15 year-olds at Camp Onaway for 3 summers. I have taught piano lessons since age 14. I love to share the joy that music can bring, and I am excited to help others realize their potential!

Grammar

I spent several months teaching ESL intensively in Amman, Jordan, and I know a lot of the challenges of English grammar! I am also highly qualified to work with elementary English speakers young and old, whether it is due to the English classes in Jordan, or working with children at Camp Onaway. I am a patient teacher who knows how to explain things in multiple ways. I can adapt my methods to suit any learner!

Music Theory

I graduated from Skidmore College in 2012 with honors in music. For my music major, I studied a wide range of musical topics, including music theory, vocal performance, music technology, and conducting, and I won Skidmore's Periclean Award for work in music composition. I have taught piano lessons since age 14. I love to share the joy that music can bring, and I am excited to help others realize their potential!

Needlework

I am a highly qualified knitter. I have been knitting and designing seriously for 9 years. I curate a blog and an Etsy shop for unique designs, patterns and one-of-a-kind garments. I am a sample knitter for Eugenia Kim, an accessory designer based out of New York. I have been the knitting counselor at a seven-week summer camp for 3 summers, during which time I taught knitting skills to many adolescents, from novices to experts. I am familiar with many of the challenges of learning to knit, and I am excited to help with many tricks of the trade.

Piano

I have been playing the piano since age 5, and teaching piano since age 14. I teach many lessons one-on-one. I am also the music counselor at a summer camp, where I give more generalized lessons and drill basic skills. I accompany the musicals at the camp on the piano, and I use it to teach all voice parts. I am a composer/director/songwriter who uses the piano every day, and I am very familiar with its challenges and tricks. I am excited to teach others to use this very important instrument, which allows them to learn almost anything musical.

Reading

I know a lot of the challenges of reading. I spent several months teaching ESL intensively in Amman, Jordan, and I have worked with many young learners of English at Camp Onaway! I am a patient teacher who knows how to explain things in multiple ways, and I have experience teaching reading in individual and group settings. I can adapt my methods to suit any learner!

Songwriting

I began playing the piano at age 5 and writing music at age 9. Since then, I have taken years of music theory, majored in music at Skidmore College, and written songs for several amateur bands and professional ensembles. My work in classical composition won me the prestigious Periclean award at Skidmore, and I use similar skills in songwriting. Through a thorough understanding of lyric writing and chord progressions, I have written countless songs, which I regularly perform solo in New York City. I write for a variety of different genres and instrumentations, and I have assisted others in improving their own songs--whether it's adding a simple harmony or changing chords and instruments.

TOEFL

I taught 6 days a week of ESL in Amman, Jordan. I taught an 8-week English intensive course of 2 hours a day, 3 days a week. I also led the conversation club, a casual but instruction-based group lesson, 2 hours a day, 3 days a week. Many of my students were preparing for TOEFL, and I became familiar with the test. I am a seasoned English instructor, and I understand the challenges of learning English. I know a lot of the tricks to make it easier, and I love to help people improve!

Voice (Music)

I have studied classical voice since I was a teenager, and my senior project at Skidmore College included a segment of original classical singing. I graduated summa cum laude with honors in music and Skidmore's Periclean award for my senior project. I am very familiar with the intricacies of the voice, and I use it on a daily basis as a singer-songwriter and composer. I have experience teaching elementary voice lessons, and I enjoy to teaching others to use their unique voices in a healthy way.
