I have a Master's degree in English Literature and have been an English teacher, a writing teacher, a computer teacher, and a tutor for many years. I know how to help students feel confident and do their best work. I can help students with research, essays, grammar, vocabulary, test prep, and many types of software.

I worked for many years at a local private high school teaching all levels of English, including AP. I also worked as an instructor at California State University. I understand the pressures on kids to do well in school in preparation for college and know how to get them ready for tests and how to help them through their anxiety. Having just sent my own daughter off to college, I understand that process and can help students with their college essay. My students have told me that I help them see their work clearly and help them grow into stronger writers and readers. I am especially good at helping students organize themselves so they can focus on the important things in school: learning!

I also like working with adults. It's very rewarding to help people who are experts in many areas but maybe need some help with writing, technology or learning new programs. Adult education has been a very rewarding area of tutoring for me.

The computer software I am comfortable with includes MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher), Dreamweaver, iMovie, iPhoto, Photoshop, Google Apps and many online sites.

How I Work:
I can come to your home, tutor via email or I can tutor online. I begin by having students send me some of their work so I can assess their needs and suggest some different approaches. I think it's important to include students in their own learning process. They feel empowered when they have control of their own learning. That is ultimately my goal: to make a student independent and confident!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Desktop Publishing

I taught desktop publishing and digital photography for 4 years at a high school. My students created newsletters, brochures, flyers and other materials with images created in Photoshop. I am very comfortable teaching Word, Publisher, PowerPoint, Photoshop and InDesign.

Dreamweaver

I have created and hosted websites for the past 10 years. I also taught a web design class using Dreamweaver and Photoshop. I am very comfortable with basic design and site structure. I can do some coding but prefer the visual approach with students.

English

I have an MA in English literature.

Grammar

I have a Master's in English and have taught English Literature and writing at the high school and college level. I am extremely knowledgeable in all areas of English, especially grammar.

ISEE

I have tutored students for many types of tests, including SAT, AP English, TOEFL, and ISEE. I have taught test preparation strategies to a variety of students and been very successful in helping students get ready for their exams.

I have a Masters in English and have taught for over 20 years. I know how to organize students and get them focused on what needs to be done in an exam setting. My approach is always tailored to the student as not everyone learns the same way. Test preparation is very stressful so I try to give them comfort and confidence to tackle any problem.

Literature

I have extensive experience teaching literature classes. From freshmen English to AP English, I have taught all levels of high school and some college writing courses. I have a Masters in English Literature and am extremely well read in all areas of study, including Shakespeare, poetry, 19th and 20th Century writers and Modern works.

Macintosh

I have trained teachers and students on the use of Macs as well as helped our entire school transition from PCs to Macs. I taught classes in a Macintosh lab and learned to troubleshoot the Mac server and connections. I am very comfortable with all aspects of Macs.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I am an advanced user of PowerPoint and all of its multimedia capabilities. This presentation tool is fun and easy to learn. I can help students present their research in a clear, interesting and professional way.

Microsoft Publisher

I have taught MS Publisher for many years. Desktop publishing is really easy and fun using this program and my students have always done wonderful projects with the program: newsletters for family members, flyers for school activities, school reports and projects. It's one of the easiest programs for publications.

Microsoft Windows

I have worked in schools for over 12 years in Windows environments. I ran a network for 2 years and assisted in network admin for the past 7 years. I am very familiar with servers, users and file management as well as how Windows operates.

Proofreading

I am very good in proofreading material and helping students improve their writing.

Public Speaking

I have given numerous presentations to large and small groups on how to present their projects and speak in front of classes. I understand the fear and dread that comes with public speaking and have some proven techniques to help students become more comfortable in a variety of situations. I have spent many years doing training workshops as well for adults and enjoy helping people overcome their fear of public speaking!

Video Production

I taught a video production course for 4 years at a high school. We used iMovie and Final Cut to create short video projects with many storytelling techniques enhanced by video effects (slow motion, cuts, colorization, etc.). Two students last year got into film schools based on their film projects from my class.

Web Design

I have created websites for years and have taught web design classes with Dreamweaver. I am very familiar with web site production and feel comfortable introducing students to the basics of web site creation, including image prep, blog and video embedding, graphics, forms and other web elements.

Writing

I established a writing program at my previous high school for the department and for writing across the curriculum. I have taught many different writing courses, including creative writing journalism, college preparatory writing and college level composition.

Excellent Teacher — Theresa is an excellent teacher, very knowledgeable, experienced, patient, and fast. I was very happy with her classes and I learned so much. After a few hours, I was able to use the program without any assistance. She teaches in a very direct way, and doesn't spend time on what you are not interested in learning. I highly recommend her. ...
