All of Walter’s current tutoring subjects are listed at the left. You can read more about Walter’s qualifications in specific subjects below.

Algebra 1

Acquiring two degrees in physics has yielded a mastery of algebra. This entails expertise in various algebraic techniques when it comes to problem solving.

Algebra 2

I have had experience in tutoring and teaching algebra at the elementary school level, high school level, and even undergraduate college level.

Chess

I have been playing chess for most of my life. My father first taught me the rules when I was in the 1st grade, and I have been practicing since with my brother and friends. In addition to knowing how to play, I have learned various standard techniques that I could teach others who are either at the novice or casual level.

Computer Programming

In addition to having taken several programming courses in my physics career, I have worked with and created several programs in C, C++, Fortran, MATLAB, Mathematica, and Python. In addition to such experience, besides incorporating basic structures like for loops, while loops, multi-dimensional arrays, I have also developed techniques to optimize the programming structure in most of the simulations I create.

Fortran

In addition to a Fortran course I took and passed with flying colors during my undergraduate education, I have also written extensive programs in Fortran for my physics research, which involves automatically generating data files while running the program in a variety of development environments.

Linear Algebra

I learned linear algebra during my junior year as an undergraduate. Having been a physics major and now a physics graduate student, linear algebra is an indispensable mathematical formalism and tool for understanding and working with quantum theory. My M.S. degree relied heavily on mathematics derived from linear algebra, as does the degree I'm currently working towards.

Mathematica

I have utilized Mathematica throughout the extent of my undergraduate education. In addition, I heavily relied on Mathematica for analytic calculations while obtaining my M.S. degree. Such experience has yielded a broad mastery of the program's various built-in functions and features. I have generated various template notebook files which could come in quite handy for creating new programs or for teaching purposes.

MATLAB

I have used MATLAB since 2008, when I taught myself to numerically solve differential equations to study tokamak plasmas. Since then I've used it extensively for a variety of models and simulations, including producing professional scientific figures and animations to boot. I continue to heavily rely on MATLAB for my current research, as it contains many convenient features. In addition, I have generated various template m-files which could come in quite handy for creating new programs or for teaching purposes.

Microsoft Windows

I have used and worked with the Microsoft Windows operating system since 1995 (Windows 95). Since then, I have had extensive experience in using and navigating through Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7, which is the latest (and in my opinion best) operating system to be released by Microsoft, and the OS I primarily use everyday.

Physics

I am qualified to tutor in physics for various reasons. I have two degrees in physics (B.S. in Engineering Physics and an M.S. in Applied Physics), and I'm currently working towards a PhD in Physics at USC. I've taught various lab courses in physics, as well as worked as a TA for physics courses ranging from the high school level to the graduate school level. Finally, I have been tutoring physics to other students since I began learning physics several years ago in high school.

Spanish

I was born in Argentina, and though I mostly grew up in Los Angeles, I learned Spanish and English at the same time. In preschool and elementary school, I was taught to read, write, and speak English exclusively. At the same time, however, I was taught to do the same for Spanish in my home, wherein I exclusively spoke Spanish with my parents while learning how to read and write. Additionally, I took an advanced course in Spanish as an undergraduate in college, and passed with flying colors.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
