I have had 35 years' experience teaching all ages and many varied subject areas. I have taught ESL (English as a Second Language) for adults especially to Spanish speaking students. I also taught Korean and Farsi speakers, etc. I concurrently worked in public school teaching social studies, psychology, and basic subjects to kids. I was also a studio teacher which I still am, teaching all basic subjects to minors on film sets.
I have three current Ca. Clear Teaching Credentials covering K-12 and adult education. I have the ability to understand where the students' level in a subject is and what basic learning styles would be beneficial. I like to make learning easy and enjoyable by targeting my tutoring to the student's level of understanding.
My areas of specialization are English for scientists, medical personnel, film/TV production workers, actors, and also people without literacy in their native language. Also: Basic Math (fractions, decimals, fast arithmetic) and study skills. I have taught social studies, psychology, basic science. I'm skilled at identifying holes in students' knowledge and remediation.
I hold a current California standard multiple subject teaching credential authorizing
teaching in elementary school grades. It expires in December 2015, and is renewable.
I have taught elementary school children on movie sets for 35 years, and in special education
classes in public schools, and in tutoring situations.
I have worked with children and parents together wherein parents are helping their children or vice versa, or where they are learning together. I know how to find the child's level of understanding and to begin teaching there.
I've had a very wide range of teaching experience in the special needs area. I began working as a Special Education Aide with LAUSD, working under a variety of skilled teachers with children who were intellectually challenged, ADHD, partially hearing, partially sighted, and physically challenged. After obtaining my secondary credential, having taken a number of special needs classes, I taught with LA county with all levels of special needs children for over 2 years, before teaching special needs classes with LAUSD for about 10 years, along with regular classes.
I have a lifetime of teaching and studying. I have earned 3 California teaching credentials all current--covering K -12 and adults. I have taught a very wide variety of subjects to minors of many ages and ability levels.
In the field of special education, I taught children with Downs syndrome, with ADD, with varying degrees of hearing and sight, with emotional difficulties, gifted and talented kids.
I have taught adults who were completely lacking in literacy and helped them read and write.
I have experience getting to why a student is having problems studying and finding ways to study more efficiently and creatively. If I find an area of weakness in the student's preparation we may focus on "catching up" in that area. We may look for various ways in which the student learns best and try all modes of learning.
I have loved the study of English vocabulary from youth. Word origins are fascinating. I have studied Latin and some Sanskrit, which enhanced my knowledge of English vocabulary. I believe that
students, by becoming familiar with new words and their similarities with related words may enter into an adventure that leads to a fuller appreciation of language and culture. The knowledge obtained can increase a student's confidence and love of learning as they notice that they are understanding more and more of what they are reading and hearing. We start at the student's level and go from there.
