"We boast of our system of education, but why stop at schoolmasters and schoolhouses? We are all schoolmasters, and our schoolhouse is the universe." -Henry David Thoreau

Hello! I received my BA in English and I hold a Master of Fine Arts degree in Writing & Poetics.

During my time in graduate school, I worked in the university's Writing Center, eventually becoming Senior Writing Fellow. There I tutored undergraduate and graduate students alike in every form of written assignment you can fathom, from book reports to dissertations.

I developed a background in both Critical and Pedagogical Theory (i.e. learning how to read, how to analyze, how to write, and then learning how to teach it all). I'm particularly versed in the Research Paper, and while most people may despise having to write an 8-12, or even 20 page research paper, I relish in the challenge.

As a writing tutor, I balance myself between teacher and guide: educating my clients about the parameters of their objective while allowing them the space for uninhibited self-expression.

It is truly an enlightening experience, in which you learn not only how to express yourself in the best way that you decide, but you simply learn more about yourself in general. Becoming a better writer can be an empowering experience. With the right focus, it's something that anybody can do. Writing an essay, for instance, is more than just a thesis and three-to-five body paragraphs. An essay is your voice, your individual lens, and it lets the audience in on perspectives and insights they never before considered or realized themselves.

I've come to find that after enough time, writing "tutoring" becomes writing "therapy".

My goal is to inspire my clients to consider, organize, discuss, and express complex ideas the same way that I was inspired. Self-expression, after all, is evidence of self-discovery. As far as I see it, the better the average person can write, the better the world can be.

While in school, I spent my summers working at the YMCA (the same YMCA I grew up in as a camper). I worked as a camp counselor for both residential camps (volunteer) and day camps (paid) for 5 straight years, and was made director during my last summer. In the following year I served as Teen Program Coordinator and oversaw after-school programs and various extracurricular activities. That said, for the parents out there, I have extensive experience engaging youth, particularly at the junior high level.

In addition to being born in Los Angeles and practically growing up as a student of cinema, I majored in Film Production at Santa Barbara City College for two years before switching my major to English. I've written countless essays on film theory, often analyzing the use of form in comparison to other genres of storytelling, as well as penning several screenplays of my own. I've also worked as P.A. on music video, commercial, and film sets.

Public Speaking

I find that the process of writing a speech is similar to writing essays, articles, or even commercials. The subject (you) is addressing an audience (the object), and they must find the appropriate means of communication (discourse). We English types call this Rhetoric, but I'll spare you the dry grad school lecture and just tell you that it's not as intimidating as it may seem. Writing a speech is only half the battle though, and I'm familiar with the translation process that occurs between page and audience.

Some of my speaking experience includes:
-A former delegate, officer, and advisor for CalYMCA Youth & Government (2002-2006)
-Live poetry/fiction readings
-Stand-up Comedy
-Underwent Speech Therapy during most of childhood; contributed a chapter to the book, "Stuttering: Inspiring Stories and Professional Wisdom" in 2012

Whatever reason for your public speech, I can effectively help you find the words you wish to convey.

Study Skills

I received my BA in English and I hold a Master of Fine Arts degree in Writing & Poetics. In my work at the Naropa University writing center, I was trained in one-on-one tutoring skills and how to adapt to and accommodate each student's goals and needs. These included reconciling any confusion between what the assignment expects of the student and what the student aims to accomplish in said assignment. I was often tutoring on preparation, organization, and meeting the parameters of any given assignment. This synced well with my training in writing pedagogy and developing my own teaching philosophy, which, in general, includes bridging the gap between what a student wishes to convey, and what the teacher/professor expects of the student.

Track & Field

I was on Varsity Track & Field all four years of high school (1999-2003) and served as team captain during my junior and senior year. I was privately trained by former UCLA defensive back Kirk Alexander, boosting my knowledge of one-on-one athletic training, as well as over all performance, considerably. In the spring of 2008, I was a walk-on sprinter for Humboldt State University Track & Field, and helped the Lumberjacks place 4th overall in the Conference championships.

My events included: 100m - (10.9), 200m - (22.0) - Crescenta Valley High School record holder, 400m - (49.4), 800m - (2:05), 4x100m relay and the 4x400m relay.
