Private tutoring with Asumi: Compassionate, creative, and individualized.

She loves working with students, parents, and even teachers to plan individualized tutoring sessions that cater to a student's particular interests and learning style, while targeting specific areas of difficulty. She believes in creating a comfortable, safe, learning environment where students can truly focus and learn the concepts and strategies they need to achieve success.
Asumi's past teaching experiences include a year of full-time service as a tutor, mentor, and role model with City Year Los Angeles, tutoring with the Scripps College Summer Academy program, teaching environmental education with MESD Outdoor School. She also and taught swim lessons and dance lessons throughout high school and college.
During my four years in college, I was member of the Claremont Colleges Ballroom Dance Company, one of the premier collegiate companies on the west coast. During this time I received training from Paul Roach, Erik Cyr, and others in both International Standard and International Latin, and competed up to the Pre-Novice level, successfully medaling at competitions such as UCR Orange Blossom Ball and UCSD's Dance By the Shores. I also learned a wide variety of social dances, including salsa, west coast swing, blues, and social waltz. Since college, I have continued to social dance, and also taught a series of salsa classes in Madurai, India, and choreographed and performed with Rasa, the Global Dance Collective, in Mumbai in 2011.
I spent my last year tutoring and mentoring elementary school students in math, reading and writing with City Year Los Angeles. I worked both within a classroom in conjunction with the regular teacher by working especially with struggling students, and in an after-school program with homework tutoring as well as a social justice themed curriculum. I was trained extensively through City Year on creating individualized lesson plans designed to work well with each student's learning styles and interests, plus a wide variety of activities and lesson structures for common core standards-focused teaching.
During my time with City Year Los Angeles I received training for teaching students many different study skills, to prepare for anything from spelling tests to the California Standards Test. I commonly use tactics including flashcards, memory games, notebook and folder organization, mnemonic devices, and visual aids, to name a few!
For four summers I worked as a swim instructor and lifeguard for the Portland Parks and Recreation summer program. As a certified advanced level instructor, I am experienced in teaching students in skills ranging from blowing bubbles and backfloats, to lap swimming, diving, and racing. I have also received special training to teach classes for babies and their parents, and took a particular interest in teaching adult classes and private lessons during my time at the pool. Prior to becoming an instructor, I was a synchronized swimmer competing on the national level and training 10-15 hours a week, so I also know plenty of fun tricks and water moves!
