I'm an energetic, easygoing language enthusiast. I also love to work with students in order to help them successfully meet their academic and creative goals. I am highly organized, efficient, and have a deeply vested interest in promoting a love of words in students. Children and young adults have an uninhibited way of writing creatively that is often lost as they get older. I want to ensure that this loss does not happen and that a relationship between the student and language is established, and cultivated well into their adult lives. Additionally, there are few professional skills as important as reading, writing, editing, and speaking well. Getting a firm grasp on those skills early will advance them tremendously in their adult lives. In short, I want to help solidify students' success through language.
I have recently graduated with my Master's in Professional Writing from the University of Southern California. Before that, I studied English and History at the University of Southern California, Santa Barbara. I have spent time tutoring students in creative writing at the non-profit organization 826LA. I also have worked for and volunteered with different YMCA's throughout the Southern California region doing general tutoring for students of all ages, as well as facilitating their extracurricular youth activities and events.
Please contact me to find out more information or to set up a tutoring session. I look forward to meeting you!
I have a long history of working with K-6 grade students in all subjects: reading, writing, math, and science. I learned my tutoring skills first at the Triunfo YMCA where I did after-school lessons with students aged K-12. Here they sought help with homework of every type. After that, I worked with children aged 3-8 at the Santa Barbara YMCA in an extra curricular setting helping them with basic motor skills, artistic pursuits, and reading comprehension. Additionally, I interned at the non-profit 826LA where I tutored students aged 6-18 in not only their general homework needs, but also in creative writing. Here they could foster their writing in a safe and carefree environment without fear of judgement or criticism.
The English language has three components: reading, vocabulary, and grammar. Students must be proficient in all of them in order to successfully absorb the subject matter. Focusing on each of then individually, and then together as a whole is what will ensure the students master their challenges.
Good writing is good editing. There is no way to be successful at writing in any capacity without being able to proofread and edit one's own work. Critical writing demands concise language in order to make one's point and there the best way to ensure clear, organized work by reading through work and editing along the way. Often in creative writing, there is a tendency to overwrite certain scenes and subjects. The only way to eliminate superfluous words is by being a diligent proofreader.
I have spent many years learning, and then teaching, public speaking through a youth program called California YMCA Youth & Government. This program teaches students to speak about political issues that they have researched and are passionate about. After they speak, they have an opportunity to be questioned by their peers, challenging them to not only be knowledgeable on their subject, but also confident in their speech. I have been involved with this program for ten years, and have covered almost every type of subject, both creative and critical.
Writing is my single biggest passion. I have an inherent love of reading, vocabulary, spelling and grammar because those are the foundation blocks that make up good writing. Over the years, I have explored all different types of writing: both critical and creative. I was an Associate Editor for the Southern California Review, a multi-genre literary publication. Additionally, I was the Communications Intern at 826LA a creative non-profit organization. I received my BA in English, and my master's in Professional Writing.
