I tutor because I'm passionate about helping kids and adults fall in love with learning. I was homeschooled until grade 8, completed high school at age 16 and graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Colorado with a BA in Psychology (concentration in Chemistry/Neuroscience).
My passion for education is due in large part to my parents' encouragement and detailed attention to my academic needs and personal interests. I also had some very supportive tutors/mentors. Early in my college career I worked for the University's community outreach program, in which I successfully administered an experimental reading curriculum to special needs 3rd graders. Test scores improved dramatically, but the best part was watching the kids' confidence swell along with their vocabularies.
During my senior year I was honored to be offered a co-teaching position by CU's Psychology Department. This means that while I was still an undergrad I was co-teaching an undergraduate course, a distinction very few have earned over the entire history of the University. I don't take that lightly!
Although I have met my pre-med requirements, I chose to hold off on medical school and instead pursue my passions for writing and education. I adore the students I have had the privilege of working with since moving to Los Angeles, which currently include a dyslexic first grader, an AP 9th grader, and a freshman in college. I have proven strengths in English, math and science, including 1,100+ hours advanced training in biology, anatomy and physiology.
Last year I earned a certificate in Academic Management from UCLA Graduate Extension, which has pushed the level of support I'm able to offer my students far beyond just basic tutoring. As an Academic Manager, I view each student within the context of their entire education and take a hands-on approach to organization, time management, and proactively making studying a more fun, consistently engaging process. It's especially rewarding making a difference in the lives students who face demanding, sometimes overwhelming schedules. My job is to ease the burden, every step of the way.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to working with you and your family!
"I cannot recommend Bethany highly enough. My daughter was struggling with her grade requirements and tests... with Bethany's help she is flourishing. She has a gentle way of helping my daughter learn as well as keep her focused and on track when she is tired after a long school day. Bethany's tutoring help is such a great asset to my daughter's education. And we are fortunate to have such a reliable and caring person come into our lives." -Julianna B.
"Bethany is an excellent communicator, always exploring creative ways to engage her students. She is persistent and a problem solver-- never one to shrink from a challenge!" -Jennifer H.
In addition to graduating with honors as a pre-med student, I trained extensively at the American Institute of Massage Therapy and was named valedictorian with over 1300 hours in anatomy, physiology, kinesiology and practicum. I find this subject a blast to teach. In fact, one of my favorite students just finished out her A&P class with flying colors and I'm super proud of her! (It was the first time she'd ever gotten an A in science.)
I've trained extensively as a reading, math, and science tutor at this level. I did outreach through Colorado University at Bates Elementary School, where I helped implement a tutoring program that improved test scores over the course of several semesters. Since then I have continued to work with K-6 students one-on-one basis. It's extraordinary to be part of foundational growth and setting up a child for a lifetime of loving learning!
I had a very strong whole language education and began my college career as an English major. Now as a professional writer and tutor, I am able to provide exceptional English support to my students, including helping their papers go from good to great. And because I have experience working with elementary all the way up through college, I build skills for long-term success in grammar, spelling, vocab, editing, structure and format. This is my favorite work to do.
I hold a BA in Psychology with an emphasis in Chemistry/Neuroscience from CU, and my track record was so great there that I was hired by the university to co-teach an undergraduate psych course while I was still an undergrad. I'm well-studied in abnormal, cognitive and positive psychology, statistics, clinical approaches, research and academic writing.
I became fluent in sign at a young age, as I have a deaf sister and my mother is an ASL-certified interpreter. I'm so glad to be fluent and have the opportunity to help others learn. It's an extraordinary skill to have in your back pocket and most certainly one of my favorite subjects to tutor.
I was trained by the University of Colorado Department of Education to administer a reading program to special needs 3rd graders in the community. This entailed a detailed certification course, equipping me to tutor in a group setting at Bates Elementary School. I also did reading tutoring one-on-one with students at the University in an after-school program. Since then, I have worked with a number of students with special considerations, including dyslexia and brain injury.
I recently completed a UCLA extension course to be certified as an Academic Manager. Academic Management is a high-level relational approach to learning that builds on a student's strengths. This includes hands-on assistance with organization, time management, advocacy, and establishing study and work habits that lead to a more positive overall educational experience. My goal is to help the student discover his/her best (and most fun) way to engage with the material presented within the time allotted for the assignment, improving grades and confidence while avoiding unnecessary stress.
Writing has always been my best subject, and I began my college career as an English major. Now as a professional writer and tutor, I am able to provide exceptional support to my students by helping their papers go from good to great. I have experience working with 5/6th grade all the way up through college. Highly adept in grammar, editing, structure and format, this is my favorite work to do.

Excellent tutor for finding a writing process that fits an individual student — Bethany is working with my college-age son to find a solution to some obstacles he has had with writing assignments. She is doing exactly what I had hoped, ie, trying different methods and seeing which work best for him. So far, I am thrilled with how it is going. ...
