Hello, my name is Shirley and I am currently a student at the University of Southern California. This past fall, I was yet another senior fighting to succeed on the SAT and ACT. After attending a full SAT course, I did additional studying on my own and poured over every single section in the test. I have completed every single released SAT exam and have even done some of the old SAT's (which were on the 1600 scale), boosting my score from a 1980 to a 2210 (800 math, 710 reading, 700 writing). My own improvement shows that dramatic increases in scores are possible, and I can better help students tackle their problems and provide test strategies because having been in their position not too long ago, I similarly struggled with the test and understand their nervousness.

My area of expertise in the SAT is math and grammar. I initially had a lot of trouble with SAT grammar, which prompted me to gain a very in-depth understanding of English grammar. The short period of time since I have last taken the test means that my knowledge of the test is up to date and that my test strategies will apply well to the test. I have also taken the ACT and can tutor in math, English, and reading portions (I received scores of 34, 35, 32, respectively).

Apart from standardized testing, I speak fluent Cantonese and Mandarin Chinese and French. I have worked as a peer tutor in both languages at school and hope to expand my tutoring experience into the community. In addition to foreign languages, I can also tutor in certain math and science courses. Math courses include Algebra I and II, Geometry, Trigonometry, Precalculus, and Calculus. In sciences, I can tutor Chemistry. I have also taken the Chemistry SAT Subject Test and can tutor in that area as well.

Since I was a child, I loved learning and I hope I can extend that attitude to other people. I have struggled with certain subjects throughout high school and understand that it's hard to be enthusiastic about a subject that is confusing and difficult to understand, and that is the reason why I want to help others conquer their least favorite subjects and hopefully learn to like it as well.

I believe I am qualified to teach this subject because I am a native Cantonese speaker and have also taken 4 years of Mandarin Chinese. My scores on my AP exams and SAT Subject tests (scores of 5 and 740, respectively) attest to my fluency in the language. My tutoring methods would include practicing tones to read and use pinyin more efficiently and using Chinese short stories to understand complex grammar structure in addition to gaining more knowledge about Chinese culture.
