I am a double-certificated teacher, with credentials in both General Education (California CLEAR, K-12) and Special Education (California Special Education Specialist, Moderate/Severe). I have over 25 years experience teaching general and special needs children at the kindergarten and first grade levels. I have also taught at the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade levels in general education classrooms.

I think children are the most intriguing people! They have such a naturalness about them that has not yet been diluted or eliminated by life experiences. They have a willingness to learn when they are engaged at their level, which is often more sophisticated than that for which they are given credit.

I currently work part-time at a charter school in South Los Angeles. I work with both general education and special needs students. The school is small, with a student to teacher ratio is 20-1, which I find works best for addressing educational needs in a public school setting.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Aspergers

I have been a special needs teacher for the past 15 years. I taught children from all aspects of the Autism spectrum, including those identified as Asperger's Syndrome, PDD-NOS (pervasive developmental disorder, not otherwise specified), PPD (pervasive personality disorder), etc.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a California general education credential in Multiple Subject, K-12. I taught third, fourth, and 5/6 combo classes before I got my Special Education Specialist Credential.

Phonics

While a full-time special education classroom teacher, I taught kidnergarten and 1st grade special needs children how to read using phonemic awareness methods.

Public Speaking

I have 25+ years experience as a classroom teacher which requires the ability to speak clearly for 6-7 hours a day. I also have over 30 years experience as an improvisational performer for an historical recreation performance company, the Guild of St. George. I own a small business that requires me to be in front of the public whenever I participate in an event or show.

Special Needs

I was a special education teacher, moderate/severe, for 15 years. Six years of that experience was in the LAUSD, the other nine in Burbank USD. I taught kindergarten, first and second grade students with learning disabilities, moderate to severe mental retardation, ADD/ADHD and severe emotional disturbance. I also have taught students on the autism spectrum.
