Calling all parents of readers and writers: looking for an experienced language arts tutor to help your student hone those crucial skills? Whether your child needs help learning their ABCs or writing an outstanding college admissions essay, I'm here to help them reach those goals. I tutor in all areas of English at virtually all grade levels. I teach phonics, reading, reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, spelling, and writing (both scholarly and creative).

Prior experiences include working as an instructor in various (primarily Language Arts-based) subjects with grades K-5 at the I.Q. 180 Academy, two years of Peer Mentoring as a writing/academic tutor at Whittier College, as well as work private tutoring. In addition to all that, I am presently employed with The Princeton Review, Professional Tutors of America, and The Literacy Guild, helping students of all ages become strong writers, creative thinkers and more confident scholars.

I hold a bachelor's degree in English, with an emphasis in Creative Writing. Since I know how to write both as a student and as a storyteller, these are both skills I try to pass on to my students. Reading and writing aren't everyone's favorite subjects, but with clear direction, constructive feedback and plenty of room for imaginative fun, I make it my mission as a tutor to get students to take pride in their work and discover talents and passions they might not otherwise know they had.

Elementary (K-6th)

I worked in a classroom setting as a tutor for students age K-5 in subjects such as vocabulary, grammar and math. In addition to this, I currently work as a teacher's assistant in a writing class for 2nd and 3rd graders, as well as a tutor for Professional Tutors of America with clients age K-6.

Elementary Math

At the I.Q. 180 Academy I taught 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th grade math to students both in a classroom setting as well as in private, one-on-one sessions. I also regularly assigned and checked math homework for these students. Currently, I offer tutoring services in Elementary Math with Professional Tutors of America, and am teaching math to a 1st grade client.

English

I have a B.A. in English. Consequently, I have taken much relevant coursework and have focused my academic strengths in this area. For what it's worth, I am also a member of the National English Honor Society, Sigma Tau Delta. I focus on English tutoring through The Literacy Guild as well as Professional Tutors of America.

Grammar

I taught grammar to 3rd grade students in a classroom setting at the I.Q. 180 Academy. Additionally, during both my years as a Peer Mentor at Whittier College, one of my primary duties was editing freshman essays, which included reviewing grammatical structure and offering constructive feedback in areas needing revision. Furthermore, my general work as an English major has involved heavy editing of other peers' papers, which inevitably includes paying attention to grammar.

Literature

I have a B.A. in English. Consequently, I have taken much relevant coursework, such as "British and American Literature from 1660 to 1785" and "British and American Literature from 1785 to Present," and many others. Prior to my college studies, I took AP Literature in high school. I am a voracious reader with a strong familiarity with both canonical and subversive literature.

Phonics

While teaching at the I.Q. 180 academy, I taught a phonics course to a group of about eight K-1st students. This was in a classroom setting involving workbooks, self-designed classroom activities, and basic homework assignments. In addition, I currently teach phonics to a 1st grade pupil through Professional Tutors of America.

Proofreading

During both years working as a Peer Mentor at Whittier College, one of my primary duties was to proofread and edit the essays of first semester freshmen. Additionally, my main responsibility at The Literacy Guild, where I am currently employed, is to proofread the academic and creative writing of 2nd and 3rd grade students, offering feedback and corrections where necessary. Furthermore, my general work as an English and Philosophy students has involved heavy peer reviewing and proofreading of my colleagues' writing.

Reading

I currently teach reading and practice reading comprehension skill building with one of my 1st grade clients through Professional Tutors of America. Through this same agency, I am also listed as qualified to teach reading at all levels, from phonics to advanced literature. With my B.A. in English, reading is a big part of what I do and know.

SAT Reading

I currently work for The Princeton Review and will soon be undergoing training in teaching SAT subjects, including reading and writing. In order to be hired by The Princeton Review, one must take a truncated version of the SATs and pass with a certain grade, which I did. I also teach reading at other grade levels, though I can confidently teach at the SAT level as well.

SAT Writing

I currently work for The Princeton Review and will soon be undergoing training in teaching SAT subjects, including reading and writing. In order to be hired by The Princeton Review, one must take a truncated version of the SATs and pass with a certain grade, which I did. I scored a 710 in the writing component on my own SATs, which is well within the 90th percentile.

Spelling

I have a B.A. in English and extensive background as a writing tutor. As a result, I have a sharp eye for spelling and a comprehensive knowledge of English vocabulary. I've taught courses on vocabulary in a classroom setting, and my two years of work with the Peer Mentor program at Whittier College has strengthened my ability to pinpoint misspelled or misused words when reviewing student essays.

Vocabulary

As an instructor at the I.Q. 180 Academy, I taught a vocabulary course to 2nd grade students. This meant arranging in-class activities, assigning and grading vocabulary homework, and giving weekly vocabulary and spelling tests to students. I hold a B.A. in English, so my vocabulary knowledge is a particularly well-honed skill.

Writing

I have a B.A. in English. Consequently, I have taken much relevant coursework and have focused my academic strengths in this area. As a Creative Writing emphasis, I have taken many specialized workshops in creative writing, and through my Peer Mentor training and experience at Whittier College I have learned much about aiding students with their academic writing. I also currently work at The Literacy Guild assisting the teacher with students who attend specifically to enhance both their academic and creative writing. I am a 5-time winner of the Newsom Awards in Fiction and Poetry as well as a winner of the Scholarly Writing Prize, and my works are published in several editions of the Whittier College Literary Review.
