My goal is is to help my students the tools to become complete, independent musicians. That means providing a holistic music education that includes sight-reading, theory, ear-training, and more. I give my students exercises to help them develop critical-thinking, discipline, and multitasking skills which are crucial to music-making. Students are soon playing pieces from great composers such as Bach, Mozart, as well as contemporary music like Pop and Jazz.
A bit about myself. I've been playing piano for 18 years and teaching for three years. I graduated with a BM in Piano Performance at USC. Most recently, I've worked as the pianist for the LA Metropolitan Opera and as an instructor with the Riko School of Piano. When I was sixteen, I completed the exam for advanced piano performance & music theory from the MTAC (Music Teachers Association of California). Since then, I've been focused on studying the works of great composers, learning about music pedagogy, and writing music.
In 2006, I completed the MTAC examination in Advanced Music Theory. This examination included an ear training test which required us to identify intervals, as well as chords and scales. Since then, I've strove to etch the knowledge of every possible interval and cadence in my mind. I practice in several ways. I read sheet music away from the piano, sight-read, and improvise. I also meditate in reflection on intervals, and chord changes.
I studied music at the USC Thornton School of music, earning a major in theory and piano performance. I also have taught had several students for years, the youngest having been five and the oldest fifty. I use aspects of different methods in my teaching, including the Suzuki Method and the Alfred Method.
I believe in relating to my students on a basic level, where any frustrations or problems with playing can be seen as opportunities to express creative solutions. I set short term, achievable goals for my students, and use a lot of positive reinforcement when they work hard. I'm well aware that the initial labor of learning music's fundamentals is one of the steepest parts of the learning curve, and that's why I use a variety of exercises - both with the instrument and away from the instrument - to establish a holistic approach to playing, studying, and creating music.
In 2012, I graduated from the USC Thornton School of music, earning a BM in piano theory and performance. I've also taught piano for seven years to people of all ages and levels of experience. I'm currently the pianist for an opera.
My teaching approach is to set short term and long term goals with my students. I give students a variety of exercises - both with the piano and away from the instrument - to foster good technique and good habits. My goal is to get every student to understand how music works so they can learn new pieces on their own and compose if they'd like to.
