Professor S. taught for 30 years in the environmental studies program at Sonoma State University in northern California. His courses included "Global Environmental Issues," "The World Food and Population Crisis," "Human Ecology" and "Environmental Ethics." He continues to give guest lectures on related topics, and served in 2005-2007 as Chair of the Standards Committee for the Global Footprint Network.
Dr. S. has a PhD in Anthropology with an emphasis on Human Ecology from the University of Hawaii. He served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Philippines from 1962-64 and has published a book describing his experiences there. He also conducted his PhD field research on the effects of the "Green Revolution" in rice farming communities in the southern Philippines.
Professor S. has twice been invited to China on officially-sponsored visits to discuss sustainable development in the face of the rapid social and economic changes that are occurring there. He has also traveled extensively in other parts of Asia and the Pacific.
Taught courses related to human ecology and environmental studies for nearly 30 years. Also taught basic genetics in biological anthropology courses offered in community college (College of Marin). Covered wide range of topics related to ecology in "Global Environmental Issues" course.
Received a B.A. in English with Distinction in Creative Writing from Wesleyan University. Later worked as reporter, feature writer and editor at "The Hartford Times" in Hartford, CT. Have authored a non-fiction book about my experiences as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Philippines.
To give you more of an idea of my background, I graduated from Wesleyan University in Connecticut with a bachelor's degree in English and Distinction in Creative Writing. I worked as a reporter, feature writer and editor at "The Hartford Times," then served as a Peace Corps Volunteer teaching English in the Philippines.
In more recent years I have read, corrected and graded countless essay exams and term papers as part of my teaching. I am very comfortable working with college students and helping them achieve success in their academic careers. I hope that I may be able to work with you to achieve your own goals. I look forward to that.
