Yes, you can conquer math, and it won't be necessary to suffer while doing so.
My approach to math very is simple: everyone can understand it, and everyone can succeed at it, whether the goal is to make class time more effective during school hours or to ace a standardized test. I have ten years' experience working with some of the most challenging students in Los Angeles County. I have a great sense of humor, I know my math and I love working with kids. I deliver rigorous Algebra and Geometry content and encourage young people to welcome math as an enjoyable part of daily life.
It's important that I know my content, and I do. But perhaps most importantly, what I bring to my work with kids is a sense of humor. Not the kind of "humor" in which I find math jokes funny, because they're usually not. Instead, I approach math as something other than lifeless, humorless drudgery. Math can be a key to continued success in school, but for most students, it's not a life-or-death issue: so let's keep everything in perspective. We can relax, learn the math, and find some enjoyment in the time we spend in front of a math book.
I have an undergraduate degree from Amherst College, a master's degree in architecture from the University of California at Berkeley, and a master's degree in Secondary Education from Loyola Marymount University. The examples I talk about in my math classes include architecture, art, art history, engineering, literature, philosophy and history.
Math is beautiful, fascinating and weird. It's also a human construct that anyone can learn.
I have a master's degree in architecture from the University of California at Berkeley (a three year program at one of the most prestigious, rigorous architecture schools in the United States). I've also worked in professional architecture firms for about ten years. I can draw, draft and make models. In addition, I've studied the history of architecture as part of my master's degree.
