Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

I majored in anthropology in college. I have 92 credits toward a bachelor's degree, 12 of which are directly related to the major. I understand basic concepts of the scientific method. I have read extensively in anthropological literature and love the subject.

Biology

I began my college career as a biology major, after being inspired by biology classes in high school. I have a solid basic knowledge of genetics, botany, ecology, anatomy, and other aspects of the biological sciences.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have over five years of experience as a teacher assistant and lunchtime supervisor in three elementary schools. I conducted reading and math groups in 2nd and 3rd grade classrooms, and I tutored individual students in reading and math. My methods include books, workbooks, and online learning games.

Elementary Math

I have tutored students in all K-5 math skills. As a teacher assistant in a public elementary school, I tutored 2nd and 3rd grade math groups as well as individual students.

Elementary Science

I was a biology major in college, and loved to study plants and animals. I have general and detailed knowledge in various aspects of science. I have taught elementary school students about animals and the history of discoveries in science.

English

I have taught 2nd and 3rd grade reading groups as well as individual K-12 students in all aspects of English, including reading, vocabulary, spelling, grammar, and writing. I have also tutored middle and high school students in reading comprehension, and fiction and essay writing.

Flute

I can teach recorders (baroque flute) of all sizes. I played recorders, and other early instruments, in the UCLA Collegium Musicum, UCLA's early music group, where we performed several times for audiences at Schoenberg Hall.

I was an oboist throughout my school years and into my first two years of college. (I don't feel qualified to teach oboe, however - it's been too many years, I think.)

For several years, I played recorders (soprano, alto, tenor, bass, sopranino) in an amateur group that performed for holiday parties and events.

Currently, I am teaching a 14-year-old boy the soprano recorder and music reading. I use the Trapp Family recorder books, and other methods.

Grammar

I am versed in the rules of English grammar, and I have helped correct the grammar of K-12 students and other writers. I have coached students in many aspects of grammar, such as sentence structure and proper English usage.

Literature

I have tutored students in American and English literature for middle school and high school courses.

Proofreading

As a teacher assistant, I tutored 2nd and 3rd grade reading groups as well as individual children. I have tutored K-12 students in all aspects of English, including reading, vocabulary, spelling, grammar, and writing. I have also tutored middle and high school students in reading comprehension, and fiction and essay writing.

As an office manager and administrative assistant, I spent many hours proofreading correspondence, brochure copy, and other documents. I am familiar with correct English usage.

Reading

I have taught 2nd and 3rd grade reading groups as well as individual K-12 students in all aspects of English, including reading, vocabulary, spelling, grammar, and writing. I have also tutored middle and high school students in reading comprehension, and fiction and essay writing.

I studied Spanish for five years, beginning in my eighth grade year. I have profiency in Spanish I, with basic knowledge of grammar and vocabulary. I have a good speaking accent. I understand and read Spanish above the basic level.

As a teacher assistant, I helped students organize their homework and develop schedules to meet assignment deadlines.
