I've been working with elementary and middle school students, both as a classroom teacher and a personal tutor, since 1996. I am especially experienced and adept at working with students who have learning disabilities. Over time, I have developed an effective method of working with students to achieve a variety of goals. Here are five important aspects of my teaching/tutoring philosophy.

1) I believe every student is a unique individual and deserves an educational experience designed around their individual strengths and needs.
2) I believe in positive reinforcement and building a healthy student teacher relationship, based on mutual goals and respect.
3) I believe teachers and tutors should avoid showing anger or frustration to students. A teacher who uses fear to motivate students is generally ineffective.
4) I believe in fostering curiosity and a love of learning in all my students.
5) I believe it is impossible for a student to achieve certain goals without the necessary foundational skills for that task. For example, you can't ask someone to multiply numbers before they have learned to add numbers, or to write a paragraph before they have mastered writing sentences.

I have multiple references from former and current client families, available upon request.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

As a former special-education teacher, I have a wealth of experience teaching students with ADD/ADHD diagnoses. As a tutor, I emphasize several techniques to help students improve. These techniques include- establishing routines, simplifying schedules, using clocks and timers to methodically build attention "muscles", and avoiding environmental distraction. Particularly when working with children, I find patience, praise, and positive reinforcement to be highly effective tools. I also can work with parents to request accommodations from schools, based on their child's ADD/ADHD identification.

Basketball

I have played rec-league basketball for over twenty years. I taught P.E., including basketball, for one year in the late 1990s. I regularly watch basketball games, and am familiar with all standard rules. My specialty is teaching shooting, based on the principles of Pete Maravich, but am able to instruct in all individual skills. I am physically fit and able to work with a student on a provided basketball court.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been teaching elementary (K-6) students in the Los Angeles area for over fifteen years, both in public schools, private schools, and as an in-home tutor. I am familiar with all curriculum subjects and state standards. I am expert at student assessment and the development of academic interventions to help meet learning goals. My specialty is in instruction in foundational skills (math, reading, writing). I work well with young children, and am adept at forging a productive teacher-student relationship.

Elementary Math

I have been teaching math to elementary students since 1996, and regularly tutor on all K-8 math topics. I am experienced at working with children having difficulty with math concepts, and helping them achieve understanding and improved grades.

I approach each student as a unique, individual learner, finding the best teaching approach for their personality and abilities.

Film

I have been working in the film industry, on and off, since 1994. I am a member of the Screen Actors Guild, studied screenwriting at UCLA under Oscar nominated screenwriter Kim Krizan, and have directed several short films which have played in various festivals (including the LA Film Festival.) I also spent two years helping manage a Hollywood post-production facility.

Literature

A former instructor for the Institute of Reading Development, I am a voracious reader and highly familiar with the classics of English literature. I teach students to be active readers--looking for foreshadowing, literary themes, and essential information as they read. In addition, I teach basic story structure as a comprehension tool. I emphasize the importance of both text and subtext in reading literature. In the last year, I have tutored students as they work with books such as Lord of the Flies, 1984, and A Separate Peace.

Phonics

I have been teaching phonics to elementary aged children for over fifteen years. I believe that phonics skills are an important tool, with lifelong applications, which are unfortunately taught ineffectively in many classrooms. I am honest with students about the irregular nature of phonics patterns in a large percentage of English, while at the same time emphasizing the importance of phonemic understanding when decoding the majority of unfamiliar words. Through both reading and writing practice, as well as phonics games, I am able to successfully teach phonics rules to my students, even in cases where the student has previously been struggling with the concepts.

Poker

I have been playing poker for over twenty years, both in private games and casino environments. I am expert at standard five card poker, Texas Hold 'Em, and Omaha. I teach poker students to observe opponent behavior for competitive advantage, and how to deal with opponents who are attempting to disrupt their decision making. I also teach the probabilities of outcomes in different games and situations, in order to help players make the proper folding decisions.

Public Speaking

My undergraduate degree is in speech and communication. I am an experienced public speaker, having given hundreds of speeches in my life. Over the course of my teaching career, I have successfully worked with a wide range of students to improve their public speaking skills. I am prepared to teach all aspects of giving a speech, from drafting the text through polishing the presentation, or I can focus my work with the student onto any particular aspect of public speaking that they are struggling with.

Reading

I have been teaching reading to elementary students since 1996, including both comprehension and decoding/phonics. I am experienced at working with children having difficulty with reading, and helping them achieve fluency, understanding, and improved grades. My educational specialty is teaching reading at all levels. I was previously employed by the Institute of Reading Development, and have successfully taught reading techniques to every age group, from four-year-olds to individuals in their 70s.

I approach each student as a unique, individual learner, finding the best teaching approach for their personality and abilities.

Special Needs

I have a long history of working with students who have special needs and helping them improve their academic and social skills. For five years, I was the teacher of an elementary "special day class." During this time, I worked with a variety of students with learning challenges such as autism, emotional disturbance, traumatic brain injury, intellectual disability, ADHD, and SLD. I have also taught students with physical disabilities. Currently, I am working with several students who have special needs. I strongly believe that ALL children deserve a rigorous education and am an advocate for students who have special needs.

Speech

My undergraduate degree is in speech-communication. I am experienced in working with all aspects of speech education. I teach conversation skills, American English, public speaking, interview and interviewee skills, and "survival" English.

After meeting with a student, and determining their speech needs, I am practiced at developing an individualized curriculum that addresses personal goals. I practice speech skills with the student in a low-stress, friendly manner.

Spelling

I have been teaching spelling to elementary students since 1996, including both a phonics based approach (for regular, rule-following words) and a system for improving memory retention for irregular word spellings. I am experienced at working with children having difficulty with spelling, and helping them achieve improved performance, confidence, and grades.
I approach each student as a unique, individual learner, in order to find the most effective teaching approach for their personality and abilities.

Theatre

I have extensive theater training and experience. I have been acting in the theater since I was a child, and have worked behind the scenes on productions, as well. I have studied acting and theater at major universities and through private classes. I am a member of multiple actor unions, and am adept at assisting other actors as they prepare for their roles.

Video Production

I have been involved in video production, both professionally and for recreation, since the 1990s. I have produced and directed several short films, which have played in a variety of film festivals, including the annual Los Angeles Film Festival. I spent one year as an educator teaching fourth and fifth graders film production, resulting in an VIC award-winning film. I worked in a Los Angeles post-production house for nearly two years, and am familiar with all aspects of video production.
Although I am not expert at every editing program and/or camera, I have a wealth of general knowledge and am able to quickly learn most basic hardware and software systems.

Vocabulary

I am a native speaker of American English. I am a voracious reader and have developed an extensive vocabulary. When teaching vocabulary I emphasize the importance of daily practice. Studying a new word and then neglecting to utilize it is a sure-fire method for quickly forgetting the word. To this end, I work with the student to develop a list of vocabulary terms that are appropriate and useful for that individual, ensuring plenty of opportunities to practice new terms in daily life. I am also practiced at helping students study vocabulary terms for testing sessions, including short-term or "cramming" study situations.

Writing

I have been teaching writing to elementary students since 1996. I am experienced at working with children having difficulty with writing concepts, and helping them achieve understanding and improved grades.

In my opinion, writing is the hardest subject for a classroom teacher to effectively teach to a whole group, due to the personal nature of the skill. When tutoring in writing, I emphasize the importance of each step in the writing process, from pre-writing through final revisions and proofreading.

I approach each student as a unique, individual learner, finding the best teaching approach for their personality and abilities.

Amazing patience, effective learning. — My six year old daughter has trouble with math - in fact, doing math creates anxiety for her (and me, when I helped her with it). Enter Bryce, who has an amazing capacity for patience and effectively teaches fundamental concepts in a positive, fun way. One time when he left she declared "I love math!"
