About My Students and Me:

I am a UCLA trained PhD student with multiple degrees in French, TESL and English with more than 25 years of teaching experience at the college level. My tutoring experience has been with students ranging in age from middle school to adults.

Knowledge and experience, however, are not my only strengths; patience, kindness, and a love for teaching are equally present in my work. In each lesson, learning develops quickly on the part of the students, who demonstrate noticeable progress and build confidence in their skills and self-esteem.

Sincerely,
Elizabeth

"My best teacher that I ever had was Liz Gordon. She is the most knowledgeable, patient, kind, understanding and helpful teacher at my school. She explains grammar so clearly--things I never understood before, I understand them now. She is able to explain in a way that is different from the textbook-- her own way. I will never forget her." ACT English

English is my native language, and I have a Master's degree in Teaching English from UCLA. I taught English in France for 3 years. I am currently an English Professor at Los Angeles City College.

English

I teach classes full-time in both English and ESL at Los Angeles City College. I teach English to both non-native and native speakers of all ages.

ESL/ESOL

I have a Master's degree in Teaching English with an emphasis in Applied Linguistics. I teach ESL full-time at Los Angeles City College. I have worked with students from all over the world in the areas of reading, writing, listening, speaking and grammar.

French

I have both a Bachelor's Degree and a Master's Degree in French from UCLA. I lived in Paris for three years and completed a degree to teach French as a foreign language. I currently work as a French and English Professor at L.A. City College. I love working with languages, and I am committed to helping students. I hope to get the opportunity to help you with your language learning needs.

Grammar

Grammar is my favorite subject. Because I enjoy it so much and understand it so well, I excel at teaching it to others.

Phonics

After completing my second Master's Degree in TESOL and Applied Linguistics, I enrolled in the Speech-Language Pathology program at California State University at Los Angeles.

I studied in the program for three years, completed all my coursework, and did 200 hours of clinical work with children and adults. Techniques and strategies that I studied and practiced include phonics and speech and language acquisition.

Proofreading

A large part of my job as an English/ESL Professor at L.A. City College is reading essays and correcting errors in student writing. Therefore, I have a vast amount of experience in proofreading and editing for grammar, mechanics, and clarity.

SAT Writing

A good writer is someone who not only has excellent grammar skills but also has an aptitude for sentence structure, sentence variety, sentence boundaries and the ability to explain his ideas in an organized and cohesive manner. I will help you to achieve these goals in order to be ready for college-level writing.

Spelling

I work as an English and ESL professor at the community college level. Spelling and the academic word list are both part of the course offerings that I teach. I also have an extensive background in languages: French, Latin, German, which helps me to recognize roots of words, prefixes and suffixes, and foreign or non-traditional plural spellings.

TOEFL

I believe that I am a better TOEFL teacher because I am a second language learner myself. I learned French as a second language, moved to Paris, and enrolled at the university, where I ultimately completed a degree in the target language. I can help you do the same in English!

Vocabulary

As a teacher and an avid reader, I have accumulated an extensive vocabulary in various academic content areas. Also, I have studied a Latin and German, both of which have helped me improve my vocabulary in English.

Writing

A good writer is someone who not only has excellent grammar skills but also has an aptitude for sentence structure, sentence variety, sentence boundaries and the ability to explain his ideas in an organized and cohesive manner. I will help you to achieve these goals.
