I am a 2010 graduate of Vassar College in New York State, where I earned departmental and general honors and was selected as a Phi Beta Kappa member. Now, I am a graduate student in the Classics Department at UCLA, where I earned my M.A. in Spring 2012, and where I am now working towards my Ph.D.

I have extensive teaching and tutoring experience in Latin-- I have taught UCLA's first-year Latin course, as well as their summer intensive beginning Latin and ancient Greek courses. I've also worked as a private Latin tutor here in Los Angeles since 2010, and before that I worked as a Latin and Greek tutor for my college's Classics Department.

In addition to Latin, I am available to tutor ancient Greek, ancient history, and related subjects, as well as more general English, literature, and grammar subjects. In addition to these academic subjects, I can also teach lessons in knitting and crochet, both of which I have several years' experience in teaching.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Classics

Classics-- the study of the culture, history, and literature of ancient Greece and Rome-- is the field in which I've received my B.A. and M.A., and in which I am currently working towards my Ph.D. In addition to being able to tutor Latin and Greek students, I am also available to tutor students in classics who are not studying the original languages. I am an expert in anything to do with ancient Greece and Rome, and I am able to tutor related subjects including ancient Greek and Roman history, classical mythology, Greek and Roman literature in either English translation or the original language, and Greek and Roman archaeology. I have experience working as a Teaching Assistant in introductory-level classical civilization courses, and I can bring this teaching experience combined with my years of study of Greece and Rome to our tutoring relationship.

English

Much of my work as a Classics student and teacher involves analysis and close reading of literature in English as well as in Latin and Greek. These skills can be easily transferred to modern as well as ancient literature, and I am able to tutor English to students who would like to work with an expert in the analysis of literature.

Grammar

I worked as Copy Editor for my college newspaper, and I have much experience teaching both English grammar and general grammatical concepts to my Latin students. As such, I am able to teach English grammar to students who are not learning Latin, as well as to students who are.

Greek

I am able to tutor any level of ancient Greek, having specialized in Greek in my B.A. and M.A. theses, taught UCLA's summer intensive Greek course, and tutored students in ancient Greek since I was an undergraduate.

Latin

I have extensive experience in tutoring and teaching Latin, and I have studied Latin for well over a decade.

Literature

I teach the analysis and close reading of literature to my students in the classical civilization courses for which I work as a teaching assistant. I am able to tutor students in these skills when working with literature of other time periods and cultures, as well.

I am a voracious reader and I have read a huge amount of English literature, as well as foreign literature translated into English and ancient Greek and Roman literature, both in the original and in translation. In addition, I had extensive undergraduate coursework in my college's English Department.

Needlework

I have been knitting for more than 10 years and crocheting for five years, and I worked for several summers at a yarn store in my hometown of Santa Cruz, CA, where I taught knitting lessons and helped customers with their knitting and crochet projects. If you would like to learn to knit or crochet, or to learn intermediate or advanced knitting or crochet techniques, please contact me about rates and logistics-- I may be able to provide materials or charge you a lower rate. If you would like images of some items I've knitted or crocheted, please contact me for some examples.

Excellent tutor — Caitlin did a great job with my kids (13 and 16), who are both learning Greek with no prior background. She was very patient and thorough, knows her classics, and has excellent pedagogical skills. In the first session, she managed to get them through the entire alphabet and a good battery of vocabulary words, and was able to flesh out what might otherwise have been a rote exercise with lots of i ...
