I have studied composition extensively in high school and college. I teach jazz composition, songwriting, lyric writing, instrumental writing, blues, and more. I also excel at arranging. I have many techniques to help the student discover the simplicity of writing and where to draw creativity and inspiration from.
I tested out of three semesters worth of Ear Training at the prestigious Berklee College of Music. I have taken and passed the highest level ear training courses at Berklee. I have very simple and extremely effective methods that I personally developed that help "tone-deaf" people hear and sing perfectly in-tune as well as afford every person with exemplary deciphering ears. I also have innovative techniques for learning how to listen properly and what to listen for while listening to a piece of music.
Staying healthy and in great shape has been my life-long passion. I have never been inactive or stopped exercising. I have played almost every sport and excel at many of them, especially Yoga, Martial Arts, Soccer, Racquetball, and Running. I was the captain of my soccer team in high school. I teach being healthy, not being "fit." Being healthy means that you have an understanding of how your body works: the muscles, bones, internal organs, diaphragm, lungs, alignment, brain function. Thus, my students are incredibly happy, vibrant beings in addition to excelling at their field of specialty. I have vast knowledge of anatomy and alignment and am able to alleviate chronic injuries, back issues, etc.
I have a unique approach to understanding what music is on a fundamental level and how to express yourself fluently through music as easily as you speak English. I am a multi-instrumentalist, I am familiar with and enjoy all styles of music, and even have understanding of esoteric aspects of music and their incredible similarities and relationships to all aspects of life. Everyone is musical and I am happy to reveal to others their inherent musicality.
I have been playing guitar for seventeen years. I was a two-time All-State jazz guitarist in Iowa. I was afforded the BEST scholarship on guitar to Berklee College of Music. I graduated their with emphasis in performance and composition. I play almost every style including: jazz, bluegrass, pop, rock, funk, fusion, folk, world, latin, and more. Guitar has been my life-long passion and I am a vibrant, exciting, and engaging teacher. I have unusual, effective, and practical teaching tools to vastly accelerate my students progress. My students learn to be noble and well-balanced characters in addition to being great musicians. I also teach electric bass.
I teach Qi gong, Liangong, and Wing-Chun. My students develop tremendous stability, strength, wisdom, and confidence. I am very precise in my teaching and knowledge and each student will benefit tremendously in learning: proper posture, graceful holistic movement, the importance of grounding, and the use of centripetal and centrifugal movement.
I studied music history both in high school and during my studies at Berklee College of Music. I will help you hear the difference between Mozart and Beethoven or Duke Ellington and Count Basie. I am familiar with Ken Burns work on the history of jazz. I am also well aware of the timeline and progression of the various classical eras all the way up to our modern pop music and all the intertwining threads of influence in the various movements. I give students an appreciation for all styles of music and show how intertwined they all are. I have spent countless hours listening to and dissecting music in every genre. I understand the instrumental variations, time variations, different cadences, different chord progressions, and other elements that separate one genre of music from another.
This has been a life-long passion of mine. I am familiar with almost every type of mainstream and indigenous diet. I have also experimented on myself with a wide variety of diets and have personal experience with how each one effects: psyche, vitality, hormones, and athletic ability. I am extremely well read on nutrition and am familiar with most of the nutritional leader's works including Dr. Andrew Weil, Dr. Joel Fuhrman, Weston A. Price, Dr. Mercola, Dr. Mehemet Oz, David Wolfe, Deepak Chopra, Dr. Gabriel Cousens, Dr. Sangeeta Pati, Dr. Robert Young, Daniel Vitalis, Joseph B. Marion, Pro. Brian Peskin, Henry Bieler, and many more. In addition to being well read I have helped numerous people to regain their health, loose weight, and overcome food allergies. I also have the necessary knowledge of essential: minerals, vitamins, fatty acids, amino acids, how they are constructed, and how they are broken down and absorbed into the body. I have been a health coach for Herbalife in the past and I continue to help people with their health almost every day.
I have been sight singing for seventeen years. I have very simple and effective methods to make sight singing fun and easy. Sight singing is a must for every musician.
Soccer is probably my favorite sport. I started playing when I was three. I played on teams since the age of five and started playing on travel teams at eleven. I was the captain of my soccer team in high school. I play a wide variety of sports but have the most expertise and experience teaching and playing soccer.
I studied Songwriting while at Berklee College of Music. I have methods that make it far easier than what is being taught at the college level. I have composed songs on commission. I teach songwriting in a variety of musical styles.
Track & Field
Track and Field is all about alignment and understanding of the human body. The best track athletes are using their body in a more effective way than the other athletes. With proper alignment you will be astounded at how good you can be. The events I competed in while in school were: high jump, long jump, 1600M, 800M, 400M, and many others. The events I am most qualified to teach are the ones listed above plus the 100M, 200M, hurdles, and relays. I enjoy training my track and field students in natural settings like parks and mountains in order to minimize injuries from concrete and asphalt. My training includes isometrics, plyometrics, internal martial arts, and giving the student a basic understanding of how the human musculoskeletal system is designed for optimal usage. I also include in my training: optimal diet for athletes, hydration, and very effective visualization techniques used by top olympic athletes. I guarantee we will have a lot of fun training together!
I am a Registered Yoga Teacher and have taught numerous classes in Pasadena and the Los Angeles area. I also have vast experience and knowledge of anatomy, meditation, and proper breathing.
