A little about Joshua:
Before I became an attorney I went through school--a LOT of school. I also took tests--a LOT of tests. I remember what it was like as a student to try to excel in school and prepare for exams. Looking back, I wish many of my teachers, professors & tutors kept the perspective of the student in mind when trying to impart knowledge.
I excel as a tutor because I know that knowledge of the subject matter is only half the battle. Though I possess a wealth of knowledge in many subjects and have tutored in English, Law, LSAT, Bar Prep Study, Math & Writing, none of my students would have benefited from my knowledge if I didn't know how to impart that knowledge in a refreshing and thought-provoking way.
Equally as important as knowing the subject is coming up with a fun, engaging, & thought-provoking lesson plan that keeps students attentive and makes them want to learn the subject matter and apply their knowledge. I find that my experience as a creative writer helps me distinguish my lessons from other tutors as I can make learning fun as well as informative.
I am a licensed attorney in the state of California, Bar # 268758. I passed the BAR exam on my first try in August of 2009 and I have tutored Torts & Contracts plus I have given general test-taking strategies to 2010 test-takers in the past.
Though I have not played baseball professionally, I am an educated student of the game and I have written blogs on baseball in the past.
I can help aspiring athletes with the basics: fielding, hitting, throwing, defense. I can also help seasoned athletes excel at their positions by helping players make adjustments to their batting stance or approach to the ball.
For instance, one of my friends was a catcher for a certain minor league team. I noticed when he was batting that he was picking up his front foot too soon and this was taking away power in his swing. When I advised him to keep his front foot planted, he saw his numbers improve.
Like in baseball, in Basketball I am a student of the game.
Though I never grew tall enough to play the game at a high enough level, I can help athletes understand what it takes to separate themselves from the street ballers that never end up reaching the next level.
I excel as a tutor in coaching one-on-one and team defense, and I also work well with taller players, helping them develop an unstoppable post game.
I can teach beginners the basics in Chess as I am a decent to above average leisure player.
My football knowledge is immense. I can help young athletes looking to improve their game. I can help veterans take advantage of film study. I can help aspiring commentators and analysts better assess what is happening on the field. There are few things about football that I don't know, and I consider myself an better than most experts when it comes to understanding the nuances of the game.
I am an experienced writer. My mastery of basic grammar skills enables me to write well. I help students improve their grammar and writing proficiency as a whole by teaching some simple tricks that will remain with those I tutor for a lifetime.
I supplemented my income at Michigan State University playing poker and am well-versed in Texas Hold 'Em, Omaha, Omaha Hi-Lo, Stud Poker, Draw Poker as well as several other games included in the poker family.
My poker philosophy is based on combining a thorough understanding and utilization of hand strength, table position and table image. No poker player can succeed consistently without knowing how to master these three aspects of their game. My tutoring helps players refine their game so they can take advantage of their knowledge, skill, wealth (willingness to lose is a factor in how to craft your optimum poker strategy) & personality at a poker table.
I am a proficient academic and creative writer. I frequently help students write essays, fiction, poetry, personal statements, and theses. To write well my students first comprehend what it means to write with clarity. This means clear structure, grammar and thoughts. I also help students improve their research and instruct how to effectively paraphrase and quote passages from their reading sources.
