I'm CBEST certified, and I've worked privately with students as well as with after-school companies. Recently I helped put together an after-school supplemental program for a charter school's CAHSEE prep. As a result, we had a 90 percent passing rate in total for all classes participating, a record!

I believe in three things when it comes to learning: routine, preparation and repetition. After a couple lessons of getting to know each other, it's important to develop a consistent schedule and strategy for each lesson. Once I figure out how you like to process information, I will do my best to construct a plan that fits you personally. It doesn't have to be rigid, but it helps to keep a steady framework of how we break down the time we have. Preparation is key for both you and me. Your job is to take what's learned in each lesson and find a way to digest the knowledge on your own time. My job is to know different perspectives of looking at the same lesson so that you know not just how to solve each problem, but why it is important to solve in the first place. Finally, after all the methods I've tried in helping students with exams and standards, repetition still proves as the most effective. Drills, exercises, flashcards, oral reviews; they all help in developing and coalescing ideas already discovered by you. I have found that even in reading and literature assignments such as essays, this helps my students to really organize their thoughts into well-rounded, informed opinions.

I am flexible on rates and willing to hear offers, and I only ask that cancellations are called in advance two hours ahead of the session. Thank you very much and I look forward to getting to work!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I've worked with several students privately to hone study skills that are tailored towards tackling the multi-category standards of the ACT.

Art History

I've worked with several high school students on the AP level of Art History covering prehistory, Greek and Etruscan, Egyptian, Roman, Germanic, Renaissance, Rococo, Impressionism, Dada, Modern and Post-Modern art and architecture.

CBEST

I have taken the CBEST exam myself. I passed the first time and am certified as a substitute teacher in the state of California. My name and scores are on file and available.

College Counseling

I have assisted multiple students privately as well as part of charter school programs in applying to and preparing for college entry. This includes SAT/ACT test prep, essay and personal statement prep, and application assistance. On many occasions, my students have gotten accepted to one of their top three choices.

English

I have an English Literature minor from Rutgers University and write several pieces on a daily basis ranging from blog articles to screenplays. I have taught English and Reading extensively to ages 4 through adult. Currently I teach a writing course I helped construct at New Design Charter School, aiming at preparing high school students for standardized test benchmarks such as CAHSEE, CST, SAT, and PSAT.

European History

Have covered all of European history including Greek, Etruscan, pre-Roman and Roman, post-Lombardian, Germanic, Charlemagne, Holy Roman Empire, Hundred Years War, French Revolution, Napoleonic, Vienna Convention, and Victorian. Specialize in organizing historical information to answer short essays and tying economic, political and social events together under a specific theme.

Grammar

Four years of tutoring experience has made me extremely familiar with English grammar and expert in sentence structure, paragraph structure, conjugation, punctuation, tense, and spelling.

GRE

I've tutored two students in GRE prep implementing walkthroughs of each individual problem, as well as timed drills. I have also taken the GRE myself and scored a 5.9 on the Reading section, and a 4.9 on the Math.

Public Speaking

I have over 13 years of experience as a trained actor and singer. I've worked with multiple disciplines that teach breath control, body alignment, and many other physical techniques that make speaking in public not just bearable but enjoyable as well! Methods include Alexander, Linklater, Meditation, and Classical...

SAT Writing

Assisted multiple high school juniors and seniors in SAT, ACT, and college entry essay writing. All my students went on to attend one of their top three choices of college programs. References available upon request.

Sight Singing

I was a State Chorus tenor throughout high school and have done several musicals as well. I know how to use tonal and scale exercises as well as notation drills to train your ear to recognize what sound each note on the scale represents.

Writing

I designed and teach a writing program at New Designs Charter School for high school students 9-11 focusing specifically on CAHSEE and CSL standards as well as five paragraph structure, pre-writing strategies, sentence and grammar strategies, and APA citation formatting.
