Guitar

I have taught beginning and intermediate guitar for several years. (I also have extensive professional experience as a guitarist/singer-songwriter in studio recording situations and live performances, both as a solo artist and with bands.)

My approach to teaching guitar is to first sit and talk face-to-face with the student in a comfortable setting in order to find out his or her true goals and then create an appropriate lesson plan. If I don't approach them in this way, I have found that some students may tell me what they think they should learn, not what they sincerely want to learn.

I also have the student demonstrate on the guitar what they already know, if applicable.

I then customize my lessons to the student's goals, always making sure to teach them what it is they want to learn. From my own personal experience with taking lessons as a child, I do not force music theory on any student, and do not teach a genre of music that they do not appreciate.

Depending on the student's experience, the first lesson often concludes with basic fingering techniques and rudimentary chords.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
