Algebra 1

I have had dozens of Algebra 1 students, and I feel that it is a subject in which my teaching style really shines. Algebra 1 is a difficult subject for many students, because it is an entirely new way of thinking. When I teach Algebra 1, I really try to stress intuition over memorization of techniques and mindless repetition, because I believe algebra is actually quite straightforward if it is taught in a natural way. I aim for "light bulb moments" in which my students learn a concept they'll never forget.

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 is one of my most tutored subjects. I have helped students study Algebra 2 for hundreds of hours, and I now know the Los Angeles high school Algebra 2 books from cover to cover. Still, I am always refining my teaching methods, and I find new approaches to teaching the topics of Algebra 2 almost every day. I have also learned which topics are commonly forgotten by students over a year of geometry (this gap in algebra is one of the biggest reasons a tutor can be so important during Algebra 2). So if you're feeling overwhelmed by all the material you are expected to know from Algebra 1, I can get you back on track and build your confidence fast.

Calculus

Calculus is one of my favorite subjects to teach. I took eight different courses in either Calculus or Calculus-related subjects during my college career, so it's a bit of a specialty. It is a brand new way of thinking, and because of this it can be either refreshing (and fun) or endlessly frustrating.

Since Calculus is a new way of thinking, it can be very useful to have a tutor with whom you can discuss the new topics and build your intuition.

Prealgebra

I have had countless prealgebra students, and I have worked with all different learning styles and personalities. Along the way, I have found that prealgebra is a subject in which private tutoring can have a huge impact. It is important for a student to build a lot of intuition during this critical period before Algebra 1, and having a private tutor for one-on-one discussions can make the difference. Many of my students have seen an improvement of a letter grade or more on tests after only a couple of sessions, and some have said that our sessions have been the difference between hating and loving math altogether.

Precalculus

I enjoy teaching Precalculus because, while many Precalculus teachers simply ask students to memorize seemingly complicated concepts (such as the unit circle), many of the concepts in the class can be made quite simple if the student is shown where the ideas come from, or simple tricks for understanding them. Precalculus is one of my most tutored subjects, so I am familiar with common student mistakes and misunderstandings, and can get you caught up fast.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
