As an experienced academic tutor who has worked with a wide range of students, Phoebe is familiar with the various curriculums of a vicissitudes of schools and test preparations. This enables her to better comprehend and prepare lessons in accordance to the needs of her students. Phoebe’s anchoring philosophy rests upon the fact that while we may not start on a leveled field in this life; however, motivation, hard work and foremost the right tutor can go a long way in helping students reach their goals and henceforth their potentials in life. Phoebe’s educational experience includes a bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from UCLA and a master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from Biola; along with her high test scores on the GRE (graduate level test result), she is able to tutor a wide range of topics encompassing both the sciences and the humanities. The dichotomy of her educational endeavors is also reflected in her singular approach to teaching. By applying aptitudes obtained in the natural sciences and clinical psychology, Phoebe is a vivid witness to the fact that the mind and the body can’t be separated in matters of learning and motivation. To be a good tutor in her opinion is to be sensitive to the needs of the students, both academically and emotionally and in doing so the construction of appropriate goals and plans to guide and help the students in their journey toward success. Just as she had mulled over the incisive similarities between the ideal and the real laws of science and the psychological disparities, captivated by the imbibing truth that has beckoned her nearer, Phoebe shares the same enthusiasm for learning with her students.

Education, Tutoring Experience & Test Results:

UCLA: BS, Biochemistry

Biola: MA, Clinical Psychology

Phoebe’s tutoring experiences include direct efforts working with students from K-12, and those attending colleges and graduate programs. She is sensitive to her students' struggles, such as feeling discouraged among other challenges. She develops individual learning plans addressing both overt academic challenges and inherent personal struggles. By allowing her students to read works of literature that embodied their own struggles, identifying and contrasting the conflicts, actions, motives and psychological struggles the characters must resolve, the students developed a meaningful understanding of their own dilemmas, a genuine appreciation of the value of education and improved academically. These encounters exemplified Phoebe’s ability to integrate analytical aptitude, clinical insights and creative educational modality in real life settings, echoing testimonial feedback provided by her students.

Soraya M., Parent: Phoebe is a very conscientious and great tutor. She builds up my sons' self esteem and encourages him in every step. My son's grades improved since he started with Phoebe.

Cindy O., Parent: Phoebe has gone well above my expectations of what I expected from a tutor. She has not only helped raise my daughter's grades, but her self-esteem has improved as well. She reviews the material she went over with my daughter on a continual basis and keeps in close contact with me regarding her progress. I am extremely happy with Phoebe's instruction and work ethic.

Rebecca G., Student: Phoebe is a very conscientious and focused tutor. When I decided to go back to school for medicine, I was required to take many math and science courses. My background is in Communications and there is a reason - math and science are HARD! In fact, I didn't think I was "wired" to comprehend subjects that dealt with lots of numbers and equations. I was wrong and it took a really hardworking, determined tutor to show me that I was, indeed, capable of understanding Pre-Calculus, Chemistry, and Physics. I am a UCLA student who has taken science and math classes both through the Extension Program and on Main Campus. Phoebe tutored me in all three of the above mentioned subjects. She never gave up on me and made it her job to do whatever it takes to bring me to understand very difficult concepts. Phoebe is different from other tutors I have worked with in the past because she doesn't just have one standard approach. She genuinely cares and wants to discover how each student best learns so that she may approach the concepts in a manner that makes sense to the student. She never gets frustrated if you do not understand, but continues to refine her methodology in presenting the material in a very human way. She is not only a tutor, but a listener. I never thought I would say physics is fun...but I genuinely appreciate it! Phoebe loves to learn and loves what she is teaching. Her true enthusiasm made me forget I was "studying" hard subjects. Our sessions would fly by because I was learning so much and having so much fun learning. As long as I am in California, I will have Phoebe tutoring me. I know I would never have been able to ace those basic, hard sciences, without her.

Student: Phoebe was GREAT!

Ok, I am a non-mathy student, and the stats class was the last thing I wanted to go to on my weds nights. But Phoebe helped me pass the class, despite my dislike of it and the fact I'm not good at it. She is sweet, supporting, and will work so hard for you! I am very grateful for her time and dedication!

Student: Phoebe was an excellent tutor. For about two months she tutored me for my upcoming GRE test. She was patient and very understanding. She always showed up to our meetings fully prepared and she would also bring supplemental worksheets that would help me as well. Phoebe is very sweet, nice, and she really cares if you understand the subject material. I highly recommend Phoebe to anyone who wants to better their education.

CBEST

The California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST) is a standardized test administered throughout the state of California and Oregon for individuals who want to teach at public schools and gain a credential. It is divided into 3 sections; the Reading section and the Math section each contain 50 multiple-choice questions, while the Writing section consists of two essay questions. The test must be completed in four hours, but test-takers may use that time to work on any or all of the three sections.

For the past 3 years, I have successfully tutored numerous students who were preparing to take the CBEST with success. This is based on the fact that as a science major who obtained a bachelor degree in Biochemistry from the University of CA, Los Angeles, UCLA, I have received very high scores from the GRE (Graduate Record Examination: Reading Comprehension: 94th Percentile; Analytical Writing: 94th Percentile, Math: 770 out of 800).

At the same time, the Math, the Reading and the Writing section on the CBEST are very similar to the 3 sections on the GRE. For the math, the GRE is in reality much more difficult than the CBEST and consists of problems based on Algebraic and Statistical concepts and problems. The same parallel can be drawn for the Reading and the Writing sections of CBEST.

Finite Math

"Finite Math" is a survey of mathematical analysis techniques used in the working world, organizing information and then analyzing it. It's also another way to use math to give people experience at analytical thinking. It is often a required course for business, accounting and computer majors.

I have tutored “Finite Math” which includes the following list of core concepts with extensive experience for the last 5 years. My experience encompasses basic and advanced concepts in Algebra, Pre-Calculus, Trigonometry, Statistics and their real life applications. In addition, I also prepare relevant exercises for the tutoring free of charge.

GED

The GED Examination is divided into 5 tests:
1. Language Arts, Writing
2. Social Studies
3. Science
4. Language Arts, Reading
5. Mathematics

The five tests are designed to measure the knowledge and skills that a student should have acquired after four years in high school. One important thing about the tests is that even though the questions may involve a specific area of study such as science, you don't have to memorize specific facts, details, dates, or even exact definitions. Much of this information is given to you in the test itself. You will have to be able to read and understand the material that is presented and then to answer questions about it.

With the exception of the essay part of the Writing Skills test, all of the questions in the GED Examination are multiple choice. You will be given a brief statement, short passage, map, table, or diagram, and then you will have to answer one or more multiple-choice questions about this material.

I help the students who are trying to obtain their GED by:
1. Identify their specific areas of needs and then provide intensive review for all necessary sections with relevant practice material.
2. In addition to the tutoring, provide ongoing homework as part of the tutoring to help them both reinforce and retain the learning.

ISEE

The ISEE stands for the Independent School Entrance Exam and it is an admission test that contains four levels: primary, lower, middle and upper:
• Primary level is for students enrolled in grades 1, 2 and 3. It is an hour-long test which mainly focus on a reading and math section and a short writing sample.
• Lower level is for students currently in grades 4 and 5.
• Middle level is for students in grades 6 and 7.
• Upper level is for students in grades 8 through 11.

For the Lower, Middle, and Upper levels, the ISEE consists of three parts:
(1) carefully constructed and standardized verbal and quantitative reasoning tests that measure capability for learning;
(2) reading comprehension and mathematics achievement tests that provide specific information about strengths and weaknesses in those areas; and
(3) an essay section. The essay is timed and written in response to a prompt. It is not scored; it is photocopied and sent only to the schools requested.

By using a standardized ISEE study guide, I provide in-depth and tailored tutoring based on individual student needs and preparation of lessons from the actual ISEE exam which includes the:
• Math review (review of all mathematical concepts and data interpretation) and relevant exercises.
• Verbal reasoning which includes a comprehensive grammar review and reading comprehension strategies and exercises.
• Writing topics based on ISEE preparation manual.
• Provision of relevant practice and exercises to supplement the above tutoring. These efforts include the provision of sample questions, answers, and explanation based on the actual sample tests.
• Provision of ongoing pre-tutoring preparation and post-tutoring help.

MCAT

The MCAT contains 4 sections: Physical Sciences, Verbal Reasoning, Biological Sciences and a Trial Section. The Verbal Reasoning section follows the Physical Sciences section after an optional 10 minute break. It lasts for 60 minutes for answering 40 multiple-choice questions evaluating their comprehension, evaluation, and application of information gathered from written passages. Unlike the Physical and Biological Sciences sections, the Verbal Reasoning section does NOT require specific content knowledge in order to answer and succeed.

As a tutor for the MCAT, I will prepare and provide in-depth tutoring tailored for individual needs for the:

VERBAL section of the test which includes:
• Comprehensive review of reading strategies and related exercises.
• Grammatical review and exercises.
• Provision of sample questions, answers, and explanation based on sample tests.

Patient, helpful, and accommodating! I recently took the Statistics 10 course at UCLA and found myself to be struggling with the material after the first midterm. I'm pretty mathematically challenged and needed someone who could go through the lectures with me and explain them slowly and thoroughly. Phoebe was a great tutor and went out of her way to help me grasp the concepts and prepare for my exams. She always made sure that I rea ...
