I am a graduate of Occidental College, Magna Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa. I was a math and chemistry minor. I have classroom and tutoring experience in all levels of high school math, chemistry, and general science. I have a CA Secondary Credential. I am experienced in training for math competitions, SAT and ACT. I placed first in Los Angeles in the LACC math competition. I strive to bring the very best out in each student, to discover their personal learning style, and to give them positive encouragement to reach their full potential. I enjoy teaching problem solving skills. I want my students to understand what they are doing, not just memorize steps. I like to relate math and science to my other varied interests, including astronomy, music, gardening, and philosophy.
Summer is a great time to get a head start on preparing for PSAT and SAT or ACT testing. It is also a good time to review a course if you didn't do as well as you would have liked. Otherwise, concepts that you didn't completely grasp last year will make it that much harder next year. I am a graduate of Occidental College, Magna Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa. We feel fortunate to have found Bill to help our 2 boys at several stages of their education. Beginning prior to high school, through high school and now beginning university, Bill has been a steady and valuable resource for our 2 boys particularly with their math skills. Our teenage boys like many, do not have school studies as number one priority in their minds. Bill’s friendly, patient, encouraging methods and educational insights have been a big factor in guiding our boys away from what may have been partially interested mediocrity and into academic success. He has helped improve their SAT scores tremendously and has helped turn the math grade for one of our sons completely around. Unlike other tutors that we have used, Bill can immediately without preparation solve and thoroughly explain any math problem.
My wife and I both hold graduate degrees in Science and Math subjects however we could not have helped and guided our boys as Bill has.
William is able to explain what my son's calculus teacher is unable to. We feel so fortunate to have found him.
Bill has been, not only a patient tutor, but a very caring one. My son enjoys the sessions with him, saying he makes more sense than his teacher ever did. I also think that Bill has helped in making my son do better on his own by understanding and applying the lessons and tips Bill has taught him as he does homework on his own or listen to the class lecture by his teacher. I have a younger son who will soon face some higher level math classes and I won't hesitate twice in calling Bill for help. Thanks, Bill!! (From all of us at home)...
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
There are certain types of questions that occur regularly on the ACT and SAT tests. It is very helpful to review the concepts behind these questions. I help my students develop strategies for solving problems and remembering the key concepts from geometry and algebra. I also cover test taking skills. We can remember things that make sense to us and things that relate to other material that we've learned. Reviewing for these tests not only helps a student score better, but more importantly, it gives the student an opportunity to put all the material they've learned into an integrated whole.
I taught science for several years at the high school level, I am president of the sidewalk astronomers and an amateur hybridizer. I am a very experienced teacher and tutor and I would be happy to see if I can help you or your student with their preparation. Test taking techniques would also be part of the sessions.
Algebra 2 is an extremely important subject for anyone who plans to take the SAT or ACT and who plans to take any advanced courses in Science or Math. It is the pivotal course where students who have relied on memorizing solution methods for specific problem types begin to have trouble. Students who will be successful from here on are the ones that work to really understand the material and develop a real grasp of the concepts. Don't think " Oh well, it well get better next year." It won't! Fuzzy understanding at this level will be a disaster in future courses. Get help now.
I taught calculus in the classroom for 5 years and have tutored several people very successfully. This is one of my favorite subjects. I look forward to sharing it with you or your student.
Geometry can be a lot of fun. Geometry and Algebra 2 are the two most important course for the SAT/ACT tests, so it is crucial that students really understand the material. Geometry is a good way to make algebra more real too.
I am a classical composer. I have written 2 operas, 2 oratorios, 1 symphony, and numerous choral and organ works. If you are a beginning harmony and music theory student I would be happy to work with you.
This is one of my favorite areas. Studying for the SAT/ACT tests really helps to focus on how thorough the student's basic understanding of the material is. I give students ways to relate and hence better remember the material they studied in Geometry and Algebra. We also practice test taking strategies. When they miss a particular problem type, I make up similar questions to be sure the student now understands how to do the problem. Too many students are used to memorizing "problem types" for tests. Then when they are faced with a problem that asks for information in a different way they panic. I work to get them over this problem and encourage them to be more fearless and adventuresome. Math problem solving should be a fun adventure.
