As a seasoned tutor and teacher, I have experience in helping students who are behind in reading, writing and math. In my experience I have seen students reach their grade level in 20 hours or less of tutoring. I've worked with a variety of students at all different levels ranging from first grade through high school. Former students describe me as knowledgeable and persistent. I still keep in touch with my former students and they relay that certain lessons helped them remember how to answer a question on a test. For example, knowing the difference between the words “where”, “wear” and “were”. The reason I connect with students is I try several different approaches to help engage the student to learn the material being taught.

When I teach in the classroom, I do not underestimate my students and start challenging them from the start by providing them with vocabulary to help them advance as well as build their reading and writing confidence. I also spend a good amount of time encouraging those students who tend to struggle with their schoolwork. The most important thing you should know is I will not give up on your child.

By using a combination of socio-cultural and constructivist approaches to develop academic success, your child will be able to construct her or his own answers, take risks in answering questions and develop strong reading comprehension, writing, increased vocabulary plus gain an overall stronger recall of material in school.
Recently, I became CELDT certified to administer the CELDT test which students K-12 are required to take if their primary language is not English.

I can come to your home, assess your child’s strengths and areas of challenge, and craft learning goals that will be tailored towards improving her or his confidence and overall retention of the material. By having a plan designed to meet the academic goals you desire from your child, I can help your child go to her or his current grade level or go beyond.

I also tutor students on the undergraduate and graduate level. My master's program required a tremendous amount of writing case studies, presentations, analysis, personal statements and research papers, so these are all areas I can assist you with.

Some of my former students have kept in touch and let me know how they are doing in school. It is rewarding to know that they are academically stronger and the extra guidance they received from tutoring has helped them overall improve academically.

I would welcome the opportunity to work with you. Please contact me with any questions you may have!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

Having completed my Master's in Teaching, I have experience with students ranging from first grade through high school. I was also responsible for teaching 25 elementary kids in a supervised class. The tutoring I offer is very specialized and caters to each and every student on a one-on-one basis.

English

As a communications major with a minor in English and now a Master's in Teaching, my expertise in English is solid and diverse on many levels. My students don't stop until we have mastered the topic - whether it be literature, English, grammar, vocabulary development or writing - I can help you with all areas in a timely manner.

Thank you.

Fitness

An avid runner, I'm very in tune with what works for people's bodies, both in nutrition and physical exercise. I've trained friends to help meet their fitness goals with great success and not too much expense involved. It's really about a lifestyle more than anything else.

Photography

Having shot professionally for freelance clients, including weddings, special events, portraits and sports events, I have a strong foundation in photography. My educational background in photography includes shooting both film and digital.

Proofreading

Having been a proofreader and a writer prior to completing my Master's in Teaching, I am well versed in the areas of proofreading, editing and writing. I am at my best when I am working with words. The experience of working with me will provide you with stellar writing pieces and more confidence towards completing these projects on your own in a timely manner.

Reading

As a teacher and a tutor, I have found that students sometimes have low confidence when it comes to reading. I firmly believe that every child can read, learn and progress academically at his or her own pace. Engaging students to read is something I am very familiar with. During free read in class, I rotate around the room and read with different students depending on their level. Their comprehension is usually pretty good but actually reading well is a skill that takes time. Segmenting, echo reading and using the CLOZE method are all strategies that work well in helping build a strong reader.

Study Skills

Study skills are a tool set I have developed continuously throughout the years as a student as well as a tutor/teacher. The tips I utilize are tailored to the students I am working with. Some of the study skills are mnemonic based meaning acronyms, acrostics, image name techniques, chaining (ordered and unordered lists) and rhyme keys are the essential building blocks of learning and retaining material.

Vocabulary

Building vocabulary is a skill I use every day and one I share with my students. Not only knowing how to pronounce words but what their actual meaning is so crucial for students. I see so many students skip over words and take a guess at what they mean. My students don't finish the lesson until they have mastered not only language proficiency but vocabulary development.

Incredible, caring and devoted! — Melissa came to us at a time my son was truly struggling in his studies. He was challenged in many areas and lacked the confidence to move forward. After speaking with Melissa briefly, I was initially struck by her own confidence and calm approach. My son immediately took to Melissa. He looked forward to spending his time with her and he rapidly gained the confidence to begin to enjoy school. He ...
