I am a graduate of University of Southern California with a Master's Degree. I have over 20 years of experience as a classroom teacher and private tutor of students ranging in age from Kindergarten to adults. Currently, I tutor students at USC, local public and private elementary, middle and high schools and adults continuing their education.

Tutoring is a very rewarding experience. As each student is different, it's a rewarding challenge as a tutor to create a positive learning environment responsive to each student. Having taught study skills, time management and healthy habits for academic success, I share these with all of my students to encourage them to find the best tools for their own academic success.

My own education began at MIIS, Monterey Institute for International Studies.

I went on to earn both a BA and an MA in Japanese language and literature.

Shortly after completing an Advanced Japanese program in Yokohama, Japan I was hired to do translation for the Japanese government, major corporations, law firms and medical associations.

I loved being a student of Japanese and my dedication and passion put me at the top of my class at graduation. Now, I truly love teaching the language and culture, and my students say my enthusiasm is contagious!

Having taught from all of the most popular classroom textbooks from middle school to college, I have an excellent grasp of the content and goals.

As a teacher and as a tutor I have helped take remedial students from poor grades to academic success, encouraged gifted students to expand their gifts and many students who would have otherwise long before given up to continue in their studies to succeed.

In addition to Japanese I have extensive experience tutoring the ISEE, the GRE (I placed in the top 95%), the SAT and study skills and time management among many other subjects including History, Social Studies and English.

My ESL and TOEFL students have all had significant improvement in their language production, accent reduction, test performance and overall confidence in the language. My own experience as a second language learner has shaped me into a talented teacher with compassion, patience and an ability to find student's areas of strength and areas for improvement.

Japanese

I first began my Japanese studies at MIIS, the Monterey Institute for International Studies.

I went on to earn both a BA and an MA in Japanese language and literature.

Shortly after completing an Advanced Japanese program in Yokohama, Japan I was hired to do translation for the Japanese government, major corporations, law firms and medical associations.

I spent over 10 years living and working in Japan. I worked as an educator, translator, subtitler for films, writer, editor and copywriter for advertising.

I recently returned to California to complete a master's degree at USC.

I have been teaching Japanese for the past eight years in Los Angeles area schools and as a private tutor.

I loved being a student of Japanese and now I truly love teaching the language and culture and my students say my enthusiasm is contagious!

I have taught in both private and public middle and high schools in Southern California and Japan.

Having taught from all of the most popular classroom textbooks from middle school to college, I have an excellent grasp of the content and goals.

As a teacher and as a tutor I have helped take remedial students from poor grades to academic success, encouraged gifted students to expand their gifts and many students who would have otherwise long before given up on Japanese to continue in their studies to succeed.

Patience and compassion gained over years spent in the classroom and side by side tutoring students.

Talent for Japanese! Without that I would not be a good tutor.

Experience both in and out of the classroom has taught me that tutoring and teaching are two very distinct talents.

Tutoring is very hands on and individual, so a tutor must understand their student's goals and meet their individual learning style and educational needs.

My experience having learned the language as a second language learner provides me with great understanding, insight and compassion into the process of learning Japanese.

My extensive experience as a classroom teacher gives me a wide range of techniques to demonstrate, explain and teach grammar, the component of learning Japanese that seems to be the most difficult for most students.

Study Skills

Study skills are essential to academic success. Quite often study skills are not taught along with the rest of the subjects.
I have taught study skills to all grades from elementary school to college-age students. It's never too early (or too late) to learn effective study habits.
Everybody has their own learning style and we begin our lessons with discovering the student's style. We then individualize lessons to best meet their learning style, thus reinforcing how they should be structuring their own studies.
We incorporate Visual and Auditory tools to support and enhance retention.
Next we apply the new study skills to current subject matter and practice until they are truly incorporated for success.
