Art History

My minor at UCLA was Art History. I have an art appraisal certificate as well, from UC Irvine, that was earned in 2005.

Dyslexia

I worked in Special Education for the Los Angeles Unified School District, and evaluated and wrote IEPs for Dyslexic children from 1981-1995. I also tutored children with dyslexia and other special needs so that they could be mainstreamed into regular classrooms. I administered the Woodcock Assessment Tests to properly assess students needs, and both their strengths and weaknesses. I served students from grades 1-12 during that time.

Elementary (K-6th)

I hold a Life K-9 Standard Elementary credential issued in California in 1971. I taught in Los Angeles Unified Schools grades k-9 from 1972 - 1989.

ESL/ESOL

I have over 20 years experience in teaching ESL, having worked from 1989 - 2011 for the Beverly Hills School District teaching Adult ESL. I have also taught all grade levels from K - 10th grade in the Los Angeles Unified School District. I possess two teaching credentials from California, and have a Master's Degree from UCLA in English Literature. My minor is in Art History. I have a Pupil Personnel Services Credential as well.

Social Studies

I have taught Social Studies in the Los Angeles Unified School District for over 34 years, as part of the complete coursework for grades K-6, as an elementary school teacher.

During the mid 1980's, I was on the California Commission for Social Studies Textbook Adoption, and my work included reading, evaluating, and recommending textbooks for adoption in the State of California Social Studies Curriculum Framework.

I was a coordinator/teacher of Gifted/High Achieving Students in the LAUSD from 1975-1981, and developed Social Studies lessons to teach World History and California History to Gifted Minors.

Study Skills

I have over 35 years experience in the classroom in California public schools. During that time, I taught every grade, from K-10, and had to help students organize and prioritize their time so that their assignments could be completed, both in the classroom and as homework. My grades of specialty were 4-6,so I have much experience with children who are just coming into the age of some independence of choice and responsibility for structuring their own time. I had to show them how to put assignments in order of priority, how to concentrate and focus their attention, the difference between reading for main ideas and speed vs. reading for deeper comprehension. I taught them how to make outlines, skim written passages for main ideas, and compose succinct answers to make best use of time. I believe I am well suited and have sufficient background to teach study skills.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
