Patient and Accommodating Math Tutor and College Student

I'm a math tutor by trade, but growing up, I hated math. I never understood it and it always frustrated me. So I know what it's like to need concepts explained and have steps written out for a student. I also know that patience is key in a tutoring situation, and it is a big part of my tutoring style. I try to make the learning environment as comfortable and casual as possible, I know math can be a stressful subject to learn. I've been tutoring math at West Valley College for 4 years now, usually I tutor groups of 4-5 students at a time, but I do have a lot of one on one tutoring experience.

Algebra 1

I've been tutoring algebra students for about 3 years now. I've always tried to make math as relatable as possible for students who simply aren't math oriented. I know that Algebra is a tough subject to learn because of all of the various rules and concepts. But I also understand that algebra sets the frame work for all other higher level math classes.

Prealgebra

In my experience as a tutor, students will always find algebra confusing at first. But I find that simple explanations of the concepts, step by step examples and demonstrations are the best ways to clear up any and all confusion.

Writing

For the past few years, I've been working as a Peer Tutor for the West Valley College Writing Center, no easy task for a dyslexic student. In the writing center, I specialized in content and flow. I would like to make it clear that I'm not an ideal editor for spelling, however I work very well with MLA Citations, sentence and paragraph structure, as well as the writing process.

Elementary Math

There is nothing more important than having a clear understanding of the basics when learn math. I've been volunteer tutoring basic mathematics for over 4 years now. I try to help by emphasizing vocabulary commonly found in word problems, along with all of the operation concepts as well as their rules.

Special Needs

For the past 4 years, I've been accommodating all kinds of Special needs students, from students with ADD, to students with physical disabilities. As a tutor with a learning disability, I know that public school can be incredibly frustrating if you haven't received adequate help, but I also know that an empathetic tutor can make a world of difference in the way they look at their education.

Dyslexia

I've been working with Dyslexic students for 4 years now as a peer tutor. In my experience, patience on the part of the tutor is the best approach. I've also found that having problems read to a dyslexic student can be very helpful. I understand how frustrating it can be to do homework, take a test or even participate in class when your not reading what everyone else is reading.
