My approach to tutoring? Academic topics actually excite me, so I bring that joy to my lessons in challenging and creative ways (without being overbearing or overwhelming the student).
I have tutored for various private companies for several years (SAT Subject Tests, PSAT, SAT, ACT, AP English/Math/Social Studies courses). I have also tutored independently in various subjects (essays, test, prep, physics, Spanish, all math levels). My primary area of expertise is in SAT/SAT Subject Test prep, ACT prep, and mathematics (algebra through multivariable calculus).
First and foremost, I know these tests inside and out (aside from tutoring) because I battled them myself: 10 AP courses, PSAT, SAT, ACT, SAT Subject Tests... More importantly, I realize (and stress) that standardized tests are just one quantitative, incomplete assessment of a student's aptitude and wealth of knowledge. When assisting with test prep, I teach my students how to efficiently and confidently navigate the test itself, in addition to identifying topics glossed over in class and tricks that cater to a student's learning style.
At Brown University, my studies centered on kinesthetic learning via dance, design, media, performance, and critical theory. I owe the breadth and global reach of my passion for language to University coursework in philosophical, critical race theory texts and dance of the African diaspora; Spanish language and comparative literatures of Latin America; elementary Arabic and experimental poetry; music theory, public policy, and fundamental computer programming. I am a published poet, playwright, and essayist. This is all a really complicated way of saying I have a lot of hobbies and interests that have nothing to do with standardized testing. I like to create a tutoring environment that reflects this.
I have a penchant for numbers, conquering multivariable calculus and the fundamentals of computer science by the end of high school, and continuing on to linear algebra and number theory in college.
Additionally, I am a trained and Federally authorized tutor through a subsidiary of the No Child Left Behind program, using technology to assist special needs and ELA students.
I'm very flexible and understanding with time. I do have a 24-hour cancellation policy, but I am more than willing to offer makeup lessons! I am open to traveling to a location that is productive and comfortable for the student for sessions.
I look forward to helping you have success, both in school and on standardized tests!
