My name is Orval H. I am a student at California State University, Los Angeles studying Civil Engineering with an emphasis in water resources and structural engineering. My areas of expertise are mainly in Mathematics.
As a student majoring in engineering, I use this subject on a daily basis and I have had experience in its application through real-life scenarios such as projects including the creation of a concrete canoe, balsa wood structure, and on an analysis of a pump station in Manhattan Beach for my Senior Design project. Additionally, I have had experience tutoring in Mathematics to students of all ages. As a brother to two younger sisters (ages 8 and 16), I have aided them through their elementary, middle, and high school mathematics. I have also tutored and engaged students in various hands on projects that enabled their application of real world engineering projects in the Boyle Heights community of East Los Angeles through programs like Great Minds in STEM (Science Technology Engineering & Math) and Academic Advantage. Through these programs, I worked with students ranging from 3rd to 11th grade. Through Tau Beta Pi, an engineering honors society, I have tutored college freshman and sophomores in areas of Calculus, Differential Equations, and various lower level engineering courses such as statics and physics.
I feel that I am a competent tutor who adjusts to the learning style of each student. I recognize that being a tutor carries tremendous responsibility, knowing very well that I can have both an immediate and long term impact on a student's academic career.
