EXPERT TUTOR & TEACHER - ENGLISH, COLLEGE ESSAYS, TEST PREP, & CORE STUDY SKILLS
California Teaching Credential, ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS (CLEAR K-12, Adult)
Hi! I am a real English Language Arts teacher who likes people, is good at Math, loves Science and History, and has kept up with technology and global culture. I chose to specialize in English language, literature, and composition in love with the humanities and belles lettres. My passion is to teach all ages how to improve their own reading, thinking, writing, and confidence so that they expect excellence from themselves and understand they must think, grow, and perform well in order to excel in life. I'm always available to discuss specific challenges and learning needs.
I began tutoring English in middle school because I attended LeConte JS and Hollywood HS during the Sixties, and my teachers encouraged me to help my fellow students. After completing my Master of Arts in English, I was informed by several education departments that unless I was a fluent Spanish speaker, I was not needed as a teacher in Los Angeles. So, I spent about 15 years as a professional writer and editor in Century City, Laguna Hills, and Silicon Valley. In 1989, I returned to teaching under a Federal Teaching Grant at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. I was there six years, then returned to my home in LA with my husband and two year old daughter to begin teaching multilingual students full time in local private schools and slowly work on my California Teaching Credential. I did a lot during subsequent years, and have much teaching experience and many skills. From 1995 till 2011, I was a working, single mother working continuously 30-80 hours a week from 1995 till 2011. I completed my California Teaching Credential (CLEAR ELA Single Subject K-12 and Adult) in 2008; it has since been renewed and is active till 2019 when I can renew it again). In 2011, I took a hiatus to attend to family financial matters long overdue; now I am substitute teaching and tutoring, as well as looking for a school where I can teach the rest of my life.
My college studies include linguistics and history of the English language, American and English literature in nearly all historical periods, and a specialty in medieval English and European romances and rhetoric. I scored well on my GREs and teaching examinations, and earned my credential belatedly (I was a working mother) in 2008, and took and passed the CSET in 2010 (just to show I could.) I will be happy to send you my resume or transcript copies, if you like.
