My name is Peter and I am a native to Los Angeles. I have always had an interest in learning and the different ways that different individuals learn to produce the best result. I am fluent in English and Spanish, I am also very skilled in mathematics and mechanics. I am a current student myself who is approximately a year away from graduating from an automotive/diesel engineering program. Prior to this I attended El Camino College to complete my undergraduate studies.
My interest in tutoring is a result of my own experiences with learning and education. As a young child I found that I had difficulty sometimes understanding material in the traditional way that it was taught to me.
To promote learning and education I think it is important to recognize that each of us learns differently. For example, currently there are several different learning styles; tactile, auditory and visual. In order to promote learning I think that it is important to first recognize which style of learning best suits each individual and then customize methods to best suit that learning style. For example, for someone who is a tactile learner it may increase their understanding to build a model of the material they are learning rather than to read it alone. In addition to knowledge of different learning styles I think that it is important to establish what it known about a current subject before flooding the learner with new material. Once the knowledge base is established it becomes easier to connect new material to previous knowledge which leads to better understanding and faster recall.
In addition to using previous knowledge as a link for new material, in my experience I also find that practicing good study skills is another way to reinforce new skills. That being said, many students do not have a good system in place for when or how to study and many are unaware of how to start. When I tutor I think it is important to assess the study habits that the student currently has in place and determine their effectiveness. If the student reports that the habits are ineffective or sub par I help the student to to form new study habits that may help them study more effectively.
In addition to study habits, a large portion of learning is not only knowledge of the material but being confident enough to pass the knowledge assessments, AKA tests. Test taking strategies are something that I offer all my students, particularly those who express problems with test taking anxiety or cramming. I have a thorough knowledge of various types of test taking strategies to help students determine what the question is really asking, use the process of elimination and methods of double checking to lead them to the right answer.
For many students learning has become a chore that seems difficult and discouraging. I believe that tutoring along with hard work and knowledge of the correct tools can help everyone achieve their ultimate goal of educational success.
