I believe learning any subject can be fun for any person. I plan lessons to be engaging and exciting, with an emphasis on activity-based learning and discovering practical applications for subjects. My goal is to leave my clients more competent, more confident, and smiling after every session.
What my lessons look like:
If it's geometry time, I'll come prepared with a tape measure to have your child create a blueprint of the house. The final product will be a work of art, color-coded with shapes, angles, and measurement types.
Having trouble with grammar? We'll create a short story, adapt it into a screenplay, and write the Oscar award acceptance speech (for when the film wins Best Picture).
Most people are afraid of public speaking. Let's arrange a surprise family mock-trial to prepare your child for the big upcoming presentation on George Washington's life. Dad is the defendant (George Washington) with your child as his defense attorney. I'm the prosecutor and mom is the judge. The trial, of course, will require your child to explain Washington's life to the court.
Is your child joining a sports team? We can do one hour of academic tutoring at a park followed by one hour of sports instruction. I will increase your child's skills and understanding of the game, as well as her/his love of playing and sense of teamwork.
Every lesson is packed with positive reinforcement. In addition to being generous with smiles and verbal praise, I use point systems to track progress and effort along with incentives to reward them. Small incentives for daily progress, like candy or 10 minutes of play time. Large incentives for long-term progress, like a weekend movie outing. Exact incentives are developed with parents and are specific to each household.
My professional experience:
I have spent 2 years teaching summer English language immersion classes to foreign high school students. I have spent 3 years running all-day recreation and youth development programs at elementary schools. With Playworks, I also coached elementary school volleyball, basketball, football, soccer, and kickball teams. Finally, I have spent 3 years coaching elite youth ice hockey teams as a paid volunteer for the Bay Harbor Minor Ice Hockey Association.
