Colette M., Ed.D.
I use the method of total understanding and comprehension of subject matter. Students who understand the background, history, and nuances of a subject whether it is chess or math do very well when testing or when solving problems they have never seen before. Why? because they know the origins of the subject, the nuances, and ideas of the subject, which helps the student to focus, have clarity, and a wealth of ideas to pull from for deductive and inductive solutions to problems in all subject areas. Cognitive modification is another method that I use. This method involves problem solving, brainstorming, using puzzles to solve various situations, and explaining in detail the methods of gaining solutions.
I am the Region XI Women's Chess Champion for the years 2000 and 2001. I am also a retired special education specialist working with learning disabled and emotionally disturbed students since 1974. This includes intellectually disabled students. I taught adult education for several years in Los Angeles.
I am retired but still love chess and enjoy helping students gain proficiency in their studies. I am very much interested in strengthening my chess game. The highest rating I ever had was 2003 many years ago. Today I am rated 1800. Let's get together and get our game back. I am seeking 2000 level and we can do this by studying together. I also teach chess for a living and have some interesting methods to raise your skill level. I am not able to teach masters but interested in the thinking and thought processes of masters. I would like to interview masters as they play a game and think out loud. I would like to write an article, book, or plan for thinking skills in chess. Chess tutoring is also very good for special education students as it helps them to focus, be patient, resolve issues, and learn the art of winning and losing.
Being retired I have ample time to work with students without rushing off to a job. After working for over 35 years in the medical, educational, and private arenas; I am now retired and enjoying these retirement years in order to stay alert and active. I am very patient and sensitive to the needs of my students. I am also bilingual Spanish.
