Classics-- the study of the culture, history, and literature of ancient Greece and Rome-- is the field in which I've received my B.A. and M.A., and in which I am currently working towards my Ph.D. In addition to being able to tutor Latin and Greek students, I am also available to tutor students in classics who are not studying the original languages. I am an expert in anything to do with ancient Greece and Rome, and I am able to tutor related subjects including ancient Greek and Roman history, classical mythology, Greek and Roman literature in either English translation or the original language, and Greek and Roman archaeology. I have experience working as a Teaching Assistant in introductory-level classical civilization courses, and I can bring this teaching experience combined with my years of study of Greece and Rome to our tutoring relationship.
Much of my work as a Classics student and teacher involves analysis and close reading of literature in English as well as in Latin and Greek. These skills can be easily transferred to modern as well as ancient literature, and I am able to tutor English to students who would like to work with an expert in the analysis of literature.
I worked as Copy Editor for my college newspaper, and I have much experience teaching both English grammar and general grammatical concepts to my Latin students. As such, I am able to teach English grammar to students who are not learning Latin, as well as to students who are.
I am able to tutor any level of ancient Greek, having specialized in Greek in my B.A. and M.A. theses and tutored Greek since I was an undergraduate.
I have extensive experience in tutoring and teaching Latin, and I have studied Latin for well over a decade.
I teach the analysis and close reading of literature to my students in the classical civilization courses for which I work as a teaching assistant. I am able to tutor students in these skills when working with literature of other time periods and cultures, as well.
I am a voracious reader and I have read a huge amount of English literature, as well as foreign literature translated into English and ancient Greek and Roman literature, both in the original and in translation. In addition, I had extensive undergraduate coursework in my college's English Department.
I have been knitting for more than 10 years and crocheting for five years, and I worked for several summers at a yarn store in my hometown of Santa Cruz, CA, where I taught knitting lessons and helped customers with their knitting and crochet projects. If you would like to learn to knit or crochet, or to learn intermediate or advanced knitting or crochet techniques, please contact me about rates and logistics-- I may be able to provide materials or charge you a lower rate. If you would like images of some items I've knitted or crocheted, please contact me for some examples.
