So first, a quick bit of background: In 2011 I graduated from UCLA with my B.S. in Neuroscience and started working up the administrative ladder of a surgical clinic in Beverly Hills. About a year in though, I couldn't stand cubicle life any longer, so I handed in my two weeks' notice and started looking for a different vocation. I knew I liked teaching because I'd tutored regularly (SAT, sciences, & English) since high school and I'd already taken the MCAT (I got a 36 based on 3 days of "studying": 1 AAMC practice test a day for the 3 days right before my test), so I applied to teach the MCAT for Kaplan. A few months later I graduated from their instructor training program and since then I've spent hundreds of hours teaching classes, tutoring students, and even giving MCAT presentations!
What differentiates my teaching style from others' is that I focus on strategies that foster success instead of harping on rote memorization. Other teachers who ostensibly "teach" strategies often just give you a laundry list of techniques to memorize without ever explaining why the strategies are useful, but what you can expect from me instead are personalized explanations based on logical reasoning and derivations of relevant relationships. I'll help you not only in memorizing formulas and nomenclature, but also in reasoning through problems and passages as efficiently as possible. If you really want to master difficult topics or perform up to your potential on standardized tests like the MCAT, this distinction is essential. Also, I actually like teaching so I'll always show up with an upbeat, energetic attitude (no need to make studying any less fun than it has to be!), and I individually tailor my teaching approach for each of my students.
