Piano starts with learning the keyboard starting with middle c. The next are what notes go on the lines and spaces of a staff both treble and bass. Children begin to learn where the finger position are and simple songs using the five finger position. Adults may include chords also but the five finger position also because correct fingering is extremely important in learning piano.
The main aspect of reading is the comprehension. That also includes understanding the vocabulary. Without that getting the point of what you are reading may be difficult. Plots are another aspect. Without knowing the plot you may also have a hard time with comprehension

The difficulty with writing is often organization and sentence structure. Another difficulty is interest. It does help if a student has an interest in the subject. Sometimes journaling is a good way to start. That will give a student a chance to learn organization and work into the more difficult assignments.
