From 1989 to 2009, I taught at the elementary school level and have taught all levels, K through 6. I currently hold a Multiple Subject California Teaching Credential and have taught in Los Angeles, New York City, Berkeley and Santa Barbara. I was also a Math Specialist for the New York City Public School System. I specialize in incorporating Art and Music into my Writing Program and implement a concept based Math program emphasizing problem solving and the use to manipulatives and alternative algorithms. My Reading instruction spans the areas of basic phonetic decoding to comprehension, using such strategies as context clues, inference and prediction. I've worked in a variety of ethnically and socioeconomic environments and am experienced in both remediation for students with special needs and specific learning weakness as well as students seeking enrichment. I've also worked extensively with students with primary languages other than English-primarily Spanish, but also including Farsi and Armenian, so I'm well versed in ESL and ELD instruction and am CLAD-CTEL certified- California Teachers Of English Learners. Since leaving the classroom in 2009, I have tutored independently in the San Francisco Bay Area and presently, my hometown, Los Angeles.
I am presently available to students, grades K through 6 who need help in all academic areas including study skills, as well as students at the middle school through high school level needing instruction in Writing and Reading Comprehension including SAT and ACT preparation. My college degree in History and minor in Music History also qualifies me for instruction in those areas. In addition, I am available to adults desiring ESL-ELD instruction.
I have an easy and relaxed demeanor that puts students at ease and truly love what I do. My basic philosophy and approach towards teaching is that all students can reach their potential when their learning strengths are emphasized and utilized and their personal interests are tapped into. Everyone can develop a lifelong love for learning and progress at their own pace when the obstacles are removed.
