Kind, responsible, and trained, I have over 10 years of educational experience. I have helped individuals and small groups ranging from 6th grade to college freshmen. Although my specialization is essay composition and language arts, I have successfully tutored students in arithmetic and algebra. I am also familiar with test-taking strategies for the CST and SAT.
In my most recent tutoring assignment at an LAUSD charter after-school program, I assisted students preparing for this year's written portion of the CST Language Arts Test. In the past, I have conducted in-home tutoring through organizations endorsed by the Supplemental Educational Services (SES) of the California Department of Education.
For me, the typical tutoring relationship begins with an assessment of the student's abilities and needs. Afterward, sessions begin with a topic introduction and warm-up exercise. This is then followed guided and independent work, and ends with a review of the highlights of the session. Of course, this approach can also be shortened and applied to a specific assignment or a short-term project.
In addition to possessing a Master's degree in Creative Writing from Hunter College (CUNY), I am completing a PhD in Literature from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. In my years of tutoring and teaching, I am proud to say that I have guided many individuals to becoming better, happier students. I believe the ability to do well is in almost everyone, but the motivation and skill must be nurtured to bloom like a flower. I look forward to working with you and helping you grow.
