I earned my BA in Music Theory & Composition from Denison University in 2009. I also have my minor in piano performance. While there I was a theory tutor and piano teacher. I earned departmental honors and was named Most Outstanding Senior Composer in 2009. In Los Angeles I am an active songwriter for pop and musical theatre.
I use a more academic approach to theory and songwriting, and I think of piano playing as a hobby meant for fun. In theory, it is best to understand the foundation and concepts of music composition so that you the student can make conscious decisions when you write. I developed an 8-week theory boot camp that will give a composer and songwriter all the information they need to write a good song.
Playing piano should be fun, and while there are certainly basic techniques that need to be learned, a student should be playing because they want to. I teach songs you want to play for friends and families. If your interests lean toward classical literature, then we can explore that. Above all, I want you to love the music you hear, play, and write.
