Hi,
My name is Gonzalo Vargas and I am a teacher, actor, and painter. I have a Bachelor's degree with a major in Literature and a minor in Theater. I am also bilingual, as my second language is Spanish. I have always been told that I am great with kids and should become a teacher. I enjoy tutoring more, however, as I can give more attention to the students in smaller groups. Everyone has their own learning style and as a tutor you have a better chance of discovering and working with that individual style. I think the reason I am successful working with kids is that i don't talk down to them and I really try to understand and get to know each child personally and, as a result, how he or she processes new information and different subjects. I talk to them on their level and treat them with respect, and I think they really sense that. I really believe that it is easier to learn from someone you respect and feel has your best interests at heart, than someone who just barks orders at you. It is important to point out there strengths as this will help you improve on a student's weaknesses.
My intention is to help students learn and apply information, not just memorize in order to pass the test. These are very important years for these students that will shape their lives and I believe it would be a disservice to teach them solely memorization techniques. I think raising a child is the most important job in the world, and so teaching children and helping them through the education process is the best way to help parents with this poignant task; it does indeed take a village. At the risk of sounding cliche, witnessing and taking part in the progress of a child or adult is a great thing! We all know that life is a lot easier with more people in your corner!
