I am interested in tutoring for Chemistry, Science and Algebra. As a retired middle school science teacher from the Beverly Hills Unified School District, I was responsible for and dedicated to the instruction of students in chemistry and physical science. Personally, I have been fascinated by science and chemistry during my life. I believe I could be of great service to your student population.
I possess a B.A. in Chemistry and a M.Ed. in Secondary Science Education. I earned my Master’s of Education Degree from the University of Pittsburgh and my area of concentration was Secondary Science Education. Within the degree I studied biochemistry, anthropology, geophysics, and philosophy of natural science. My thesis dealt with Anticipatory Learning as applied to Chemistry teaching at the high school level. In addition, I have experience teaching high school biology, chemistry, advanced placement chemistry, physical science and earth science and algebra during my thirty year long teaching career.
I studied under Dr. Dan Casanova at California State University at Los Angeles from 1974 to 1975. During that time I assisted Dr. Casanova in an organic chemistry laboratory research project. This project enriched my knowledge and gave me the opportunity to learn about chemistry investigations. He guided me through the year long process in which he attempted to synthesize an unstable organic compound. I conducted the experiment under his direction and wrote many of the laboratory summaries.
I am talented in the areas of teaching organization and study skills, laboratory skills and report writing skills. I have developed a technique of my own, which enables students to master information from their textbook reading. Furthermore, I am very “hands on” when it comes to the scientific discovery process. As an experienced educator, I have acquired expert knowledge in how to meet the needs of diverse student populations including: gifted students, at risk students, students with different learning styles, English Language learners, and low achieving students.
I consider learning a lifelong process and continue to enroll in classes for my own educational advancement and enjoyment. School enrollment rejuvenates my teaching skills and doesn’t let me lose sight of how students feel with the challenges associated with learning new materials. It causes me to be cognizant of student needs and not forget how it feels to be on the receiving end.
