As a lifelong reader and writer with a BA from the USC film school and an MFA in Writing, completing a collection of short stories about magic portals and middle school, I strive to share my passion for learning by helping students reach their true potential. I will work with students to not only develop their skills but to experience the satisfaction that comes from mastering an essay, fully comprehending a great work of literature or decoding the underlying logic of math problems so that math finally makes sense!
As a tutor for 1 on 1 Academic Tutors, I have logged in over 1200 hours. I have tutored students of all ages from kindergarten to college-age and each age group presents its own unique set of rewards, which I love about my job!
While tutoring I have faced challenges as many students find school to be boring, confusing and scary. However, through games and innovative exercises I have helped students discover that not only is an A well within their reach, but it can actually be enjoyable! When tutoring students in writing, I use exercises involving free-writing and storytelling to help each student to discover his or her unique voice. When teaching math I use visual representations of math problems to help make the material more concrete. I also teach students study skills such as color-coding, highlighting, mnemonic devices and organizing their notes. I adapt my teaching methods to the student's learning style, breaking down the process step-by-step and encouraging the student to ask questions. In order for a successful educational transaction to occur, the teacher must want to teach and the student must want to learn. While the latter may not be in place initially, I will change that by making the learning experience as fun and exciting as possible. By teaching with enthusiasm, I compel my students to find within themselves a true joy for learning.
I have a wide range of writing experience both academically and professionally. While studying English and Film at the University of Southern California, I composed numerous analytical essays requiring me to be well-versed in theory and literary comprehension. In my career I have written everything from film reviews to flyers to press announcements as well as editing novels for a professional publication. I also value diversity in my tutoring experience, teaching everything from basic reading comprehension to AP English to SAT Test Prep to history to algebra. Additionally I have experience working with ESL students. In all situations I personalize my approach, encouraging students to take an active role in the learning process.
