As a tutor, I have specialized in helping students who've been one to two grade levels behind in reading, writing, and mathematics gain a grade level within 20 hours of tutoring. I take specific pride in my primary students learning to read and write because I have seen just how much literacy development builds a child's self-esteem and confidence.
I believe children thrive if they are challenged and I never underestimate a child's ability. I have often used strategies that are typically used for third graders to help my first grade students read. In mathematics, I like to use manipulatives and hands-on activities to increase student understanding of concepts and improve retention. I tend to use sociocultural teaching strategies. Using students' current knowledge helps connect their understandings to the new content and skills that they must develop. It makes for much more meaningful learning when lessons are related to what they currently know.
I often utilize educational games and colorful flashcards to keep my students engaged. I also take time to truly get to know my students' likes and dislikes about school to help design tutoring sessions that will increase their desire to learn and succeed.
I like to get my students' parents involved in their learning. After every tutoring session, I take the time to inform parents of their child's progress and offer recommendations of activities that can be done between tutoring sessions to maintain and improve upon student's progress.
The families I have worked with over the years have often made feel like I was a family member and I wouldn't have it any other way. I continue to check in on my students even after they have completed tutoring with me because I truly care about their academic and personal success.
I provide tutoring services to secondary level, college and graduate studies students. My specialty is developing and improving writing skills. As a student at USC, I had extensive experience helping my peers write APA-style academic papers. Many of the students in my education program were shifting careers and had not been in such rigorous classes in a long time nor had the writing abilities at the beginning of the program to successfully achieve high marks on their assignments. With my assistance, I was able to assist several of my peers who initially struggled in the program craft graduate-worthy papers. The peers I worked with often walked away with a better sense of how to decipher writing prompts, determine the critical elements necessary to support topics and structure their papers in an effective manner that earned them high marks. If you are a secondary school, undergraduate or master's student in need of skills to improve your writing, I am more than capable in helping you achieve your academic goals.
I am currently accepting students for summer enrichment and review. I can assess your child's current skill levels to prepare a learning plan to review concepts and provide a solid foundation for the coming 2013-2014 school year. Please contact me to discuss your child's academic needs. Since I have ongoing students continuing with me through the summer, I am only accepting new students within a 5-mile radius. I often only have a half hour between students, so I must stay within this radius to keep all sessions on time. Thank you for understanding.
