I'm a recent graduate from UCLA with a B.S. in mathematics for teaching. I have been tutoring full time since fall 2010, which means I have over 1000 hours total tutoring experience working with students from 2nd to 12th grade, and beyond. I am certified in both the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST) and the California Subject Examination for Teachers (CSET) in mathematics.

I tutor every middle school or high school math subject including calculus (Algebra 1, Algebra 2, calculus, geometry, pre-algebra, pre-calculus, trigonometry), and I'm happy to tutor my students' younger siblings in elementary school math, too. I also tutor in some university-level mathematics (single variable calculus, college algebra, abstract algebra and analysis, to name a few). I teach not only the procedures for completing problems, but also why those procedures work, where the concepts are used in the real world and why they are important. I have many engaging, intuition-building real-world mathematics lessons prepared for the most challenging subjects that have been extensively tested in the classroom for effectiveness. Because I tutor in almost every level of mathematics, I can effectively help both students who need help catching up to their peers and students who need more challenging work than they are given in school. Note:
I generally only do in-home tutoring for students who live within about 5 miles of 90034 (the Palms area of L.A.) but I am also happy to meet any student at a public location (coffee shop, library, etc.) in or near Palms or Culver City. Algebra 1

I have extensive experience tutoring in Algebra 1 over the past twelve months since I have been tutoring professionally full time. Algebra 1 is one of the most common subjects I am asked to tutor.

Algebra 2

Like Algebra 1, I have had many requests to tutor Algebra 2 over the past twelve months since I have been tutoring full time. Algebra 2 is one of the most common subjects I am asked to tutor, and I feel I have now completely mastered the material, though I am learning more about how to teach it every day.

Calculus

Though I receive fewer requests to tutor Calculus, it is one of my favorite subjects to help students with. The material is comparatively fresh in my mind (compared to say, Geometry), and I enjoy the more challenging problems. My calculus lessons are often my favorite of the week.

Geometry

I am very passionate about teaching Geometry in a pedagogically sound way. Though I get few requests for this subject (I have helped only 3-5 students with this material in the last year, so please bring your textbook along when coming to tutoring for Geometry), I believe in teaching with discovery and proof in this course. Prealgebra

Over the past year I have gained valuable experience tutoring in this difficult-to-teach subject. Helping students prepare the mathematical foundation for the challenges of Algebra is very rewarding, and working with the material in Pre-Algebra is great because of how useful it will be in a student's everyday life.

Precalculus

I love Pre-Calculus. I have extensive experience tutoring in Pre-Calculus because it is one of the subjects I am most commonly asked to tutor. Helping students to form the mathematical foundation for the challenging material in Calculus is very rewarding, as is working with the talented high school students who take this course.

Trigonometry

Trigonometry, the branch of mathematics dealing with the relations of the sides and angles of triangles and sine, cosine and tangent, is fun to teach because of all of the real-life applications. I am a believer in teaching why unit circle trigonometry is so useful, how it is related to basic triangle trigonometry and where it comes from. I have tons of experience teaching this subject because it is an integral part of most Geometry, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus courses.

Writing

I love tutoring students in college-level essay writing! Although math education is my true passion, along the way to my degree in Mathematics I also learned how to communicate my ideas clearly, and organize my thoughts well in writing, skills necessary in the pursuit of mathematics. Not to mention that there were also several writing classes I took at UCLA. I'm a tough critic when it comes to writing, but if you work with me your papers will turn out better because of it.

English

I love tutoring students in College-Level Essay Writing! Although Math Education is my true passion, communicating ideas logically and organization naturally go along with that subject matter. Since organization and logic skills are key to any essay's argument, this is an obvious fit to my interests. Warning: I will mark your papers up in red ink, my comments are not few or far between.

Elementary (K-6th)

I first started tutoring elementary school students in Mathematics here in Los Angeles as part of the No Child Left Behind program, and immediately found that I loved it. C++

As an Undergraduate at UCLA, I worked for the Program in Computing Dept. in the computer lab where my job was to help students in Intro to C++ with their homework and answer any questions they had about C++ programming or using MS Visual Studio. I have completed Intro to C++ Programming (PIC 10a) at UCLA with a B+.

CBEST

I took the CBEST a couple of years ago, just after finishing my degree in math for teaching. I took it on 4 hours of sleep and still passed. It's basically a review of high school and general ed., so I would be happy to tutor test prep for this exam.

Computer Programming

I took PIC 10a at UCLA a couple of years ago and received a B+. I only know C++ but could help tutor just about any programming language because most are based on C anyways. I'm a tutor for intermediate to advanced programmers who need help with spelling and syntax, not just with mathematics.
