I have an MFA in music composition from CalArts, where I also taught and tutored theory and ear training classes as a graduate teaching assistant for two years. Since graduating, I have stayed active as a performer and composer of new and experimental music in Los Angeles. I play keyboard instruments and write music for a variety of ensembles with and without electronics. Regardless of my own style of composition, I can teach composition in any style and for any medium along with all the relevant training in orchestration, theory, and analysis. My strengths as a teacher are my patience and my ability to present material from many different angles.

Composition (Music)

I have undergraduate and graduate degrees in composition and have been active as a composer/performer here in Los Angeles for the past 2 years. While my personal focus is on experimental music I have experience with everything from film music, modern/academic techniques, classical styles, and certain pop genres. I have been very fortunate to have had some of the best teachers around and am eager to pass on what I have learned from them to others.

Ear Training

I have a Masters degree in music composition and have taught 2 classes in undergraduate ear training as part of my department assistantship. I have a very broad range of practice techniques and ways to conceptualize the material that would be beneficial to anyone who wishes to do better at this important subject. In addition to my classroom experience I tutored ear training students 1 on 1 during my degree program.

I have undergraduate and graduate degrees in Music Composition and have been teaching music for over 5 years.

Music History

I have undergraduate and graduate degrees in music composition and have taken many courses on music history ranging from western music from ancient to modern times, jazz history, and world music. I play the harpsichord and am very interested in early music and continue to read and study the subject now that I have graduated. I have always excelled at writing papers for music history courses and can tutor both for concepts and for help with writing essays.

Piano

I have undergraduate and graduate degrees in music composition and took piano and harpsichord lessons during my undergraduate studies and continued with harpsichord during graduate school. I have been a private piano teacher for many years for all ages and levels specializing in classical music. I studied piano with Roger Woodward who is one of the most respected pianists and teachers around and would be eager to pass his methods and insights on to others.
