Hi!

I'm Heather. I live in Los Angeles and work as a writer, editor, blogger, and actor. I grew up in San Francisco, where I attended a private, college preparatory high school. I then graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Southern California, with degrees in English Literature and Theatre.

Since my junior year of high school, I have been tutoring my peers and other students in writing, grammar, editing, essays, SAT prep, and more! I have helped business majors write presentations, helped environmental science students prepare posters, and helped valedictorians work on their speeches. I have formal training in helping students create and edit essays.

I currently tutor several students in ESL (English as a Second Language). I also tutor in essay writing, essay researching, proofreading, general writing, reading, and editing. I offer homework help, too. I specialize in college, post-college, and professional students. My students come from all over the world!

I'm very easy-going, patient, and friendly. I can listen as you tell me what areas you would like to work on and help you design a plan of tutoring to improve your abilities. I can also help you focus and get your work done if you need homework help or help studying.

Grammar

Grammar is a tough thing to master. Knowing the difference between "its" and "it's" and figuring out where to put your semicolons can be hard. I have specially designed worksheets to help you learn common grammar mistakes and tricks to help you remember. If there's a specific grammatical rule or subject you have questions about, we can work on that. I want to help make figuring out grammar easier. Oh, and I love commas!

English

Majoring in English, I got a lot of practice with many aspects of the subject. I learned how to write solid papers supported with research and quotes, which always earned high marks. Since graduating, I have tutored students in English and English as a second language for several years.

Literature

From poetry to prose, Milton to Larsson...there is so much written Literature that sorting through it can be daunting. Writing about it can seem challenging. Figuring out what the writer meant can seem impossible. But I can help. I have earned top marks in Literature since high school, and wrote a thesis on Shakespeare which scored A+ Honors in college. Together, we can read through your books, plays, or short stories, and work out how to talk about and write about them.

Theatre

I have been studying theatre since age 12, when I began taking classes at the American Conservatory Theatre (ACT) in San Francisco. After exhausting their range of classes, I also trained at Judy Berlin's Kids on Camera before moving to Los Angeles in 2003 to attend USC, where I studied at the School of Theatre and received my B.A.

ESL/ESOL

I have 5+ years of experience tutoring students in English, writing, and grammar. Many students who I have tutored spoke English as a second language. I work from the bottom up, teaching the foundations of the language and building upon those to create confidence. I tutor through a combination of reading, writing, and conversation.

Cooking

I have been cooking since the age of 5 when I began to help my parents prepare meals. They taught me the basics: knife skills, herbs and spices, cooking times, etc. By the time I was a teenager, I was preparing meals for the whole family.
