As an educational consultant who specializes in writing enrichment, test preparation and the admissions process, I pride myself on pushing my students to their academic limits by nurturing the drive to excel rather than contentment with just getting by.
In 2004, I graduated from Phillips Academy Andover with academic honors in English and Psychology, then attended the University of Southern California as a Trustee Scholar and graduated Cum Laude in 2008.
My background includes:
-Private test preparation, essay coaching, and admissions consulting for students all over the U.S. and abroad
-Writing workshops, test prep courses, curriculum development, and mentorships for Launch Education, Prep Center Los Angeles, Say Yes to Life Inc, and Boys and Girls Clubs of America
-Member of Western Association for College Admission Counseling
APPROACH
Understanding that the needs, goals and learning styles of each student are unique, I shun any cookie cutter approach to instruction and am committed to developing a customized curriculum for each student that will most effectively address his/her individual strengths and weaknesses.
Standardized Test Preparation -- ACT, SAT, ISEE:
In order to successfully conquer the three major problems students face when it comes to standardized testing — lack of familiarity with vital concepts covered; lack of repeated practice applying these concepts to challenging problems; and decreased accuracy due to a lack of confidence under the pressures and constraints of the test-taking scenario — each personalized curriculum emphasizes all three phases to progressively boost each student's performance.
Admissions and Personal Statements:
Having provided admissions consulting throughout every admissions season since 2004, I emphasize the importance of taking no element of applications too lightly, from choosing schools to target to strengthening the presentation of each candidate on paper. Understanding that essays and personal statements are primary opportunities within the admissions process for students to stand out and show who they really are by allowing their voices and personalities to shine through otherwise generic applications, I help determine which experiences students should highlight to best represent their individuality, triumphs, ambitions, and potentials in order to convey what they ultimately have to offer as candidates. From there, I provide guidance geared toward avoiding common essay mishaps during revisions, as well as strengthening the remaining elements of the application.
Writing Enrichment:
In strengthening students’ understanding of the writing process, I focus on the development of a student's distinctive voice as a writer in order to strengthen his/her understanding of structural effectiveness and grammatical accuracy based on the idea that if students are placed in a position to care more about what they wish to communicate from the inside out rather than from the outside in, it becomes more important on a personal level to understand how to communicate it most accurately and effectively. Some students can throw together an “A” paper in one hectic night; most students cannot. For those students, acknowledgment and understanding of common writing errors and the value of the writing process are vital to fulfilling their potentials as academic writers. My personalized techniques aim to achieve that necessary mastery in each of my students.
