I am a professional visual artist and educator with a Master of Fine Arts degree from Claremont Graduate University. In addition to being a professional Teaching Artist, I am also an excellent tutor for all elementary school subjects and English, Language Arts and Writing for high school and middle school. In the fine arts, my area of concentration is ceramics and sculpture, but I am an expert teacher of drawing, painting, mixed media, printmaking, art history and the business of art. My artistic strengths are in creative thinking and problem solving, both 2D and 3D design, and working with materials. I have exhibited my work nationally and internationally and have artwork included in both private and public collections.
For many years, I have taught preschool through college and continuing education in schools, through non profits and in the community. I have worked with special needs students and general education students, as well as gifted students. I have worked as a substitute teacher for grades K-6 and love working with senior citizens as well. While in college, I was a dancer and did musical theater. Subsequently, I have art directed and choreographed plays, designed and painted sets, created props and costumes. I can also teach sewing and crafts. I am trained in and experienced in leadership development, standards based art curriculum, professional development instruction for teachers, differentiated learning styles, learning differences, special needs and advocacy and behavior therapy.
By nature, I am very patient and loving and am a dedicated parent and educator. As I teach, whether in the classroom or as a private tutor, I desire to create an atmosphere of creative problem solving, relaxed engagement and the joy of learning with my students. I first asses the individual level at which the student begins and then help them to progress in their learning, at a pace that is comfortable and yet challenging. I enjoy getting to know the students and their interests in order to engage them by tapping into their own strengths and interests. In this way, I like to build a working relationship that is enriching, fun and interesting to us both.
